The 1954-55 intercollegiate athle
tic camp^iign has come to a close
for Atlantic Christian College. A
twin bill with an old rival. East
Carolina, rang down the curtain
on the haselxill scenr
Ci»ach Jack McComas, squad did
not have a gn*at season, but with
a f»*w breaks here and there the
Bulldogs could have changc'd the
complexion of the whole race for
the east<‘rn division championship
in the North State ConfertMice.
The Bulklogs finish<*d up one run
shy of tlie winners in several
games and at one time they had
lout nine games by a t/>tal of 12
runs.
One bright not<‘ over the season
was the pitching that AC got from
its mound staff. The hurlers did
fine w’ork during the campftign but
couldn’t get the breaks they ne<*d-
ed to win Ken Fulghuni lost a
heart-breaking 2-0 mound duel to
Fast Carolina's Tom Pruitt, as the
‘E)ogs couldn't muster enough base
knocks. The same thing happened
t<« H pcmvrhmise Elon crew. In the
second game of that day hard luck
Kon Fulghum lost a 4-2 game.
Pamlico County’s contribution to
the Atlantic Christian baseball,*
Dick Rogers, also had some tough j
luck. He lost two 5-4 decisions to<
Guilford ;
Norman Catlett, who switched
from bc'hind the plate to third base j
and then tixik to the hill to try his'

Now it’s time for all of the "arnuhair" coaches to
take over and diwusfi the past year.
Kasketbali season was u Ion* awaited event, and in
the o"peninit K«me duriiiK homecominn week Iho HulldoK^
ripped into the I.ynrhburK Hornetn, 1(14-71 before a ca
pacity crowd. Hopes beiran to soar immeciialely and all
over the state the 'Pors were the scourite of the North
State Conference.
.Not lonif afterward. Mcfonia.n took his crew to South
Carolina where they locked horns with I’resbyterian and
Krskine Colleifes only to come out on the short entl of the
score in both encounteiK. The AC boys pulled back into
Wilson only to find an air of (iisai)pointment.
Then came preparation for the initial conference
Kiime. The boys worked hard for the battle with IliKh
Point and spirit was hiirh.
The pay off came w hen AC raced to a 101-97 verdict.
The HulliioKs kept KoinK west after they left IliKh I’oint.
At Cullowee they met Western Carolina College. The
iiulldoKs overcame an 11 point deficit to win troini; away.
Seven more loop wins jfi'Ve Atlantic Chri.stian a !>-(»
conference record and top spot in the league. Then came
the Kast Carolina tilt, and these two bitter rivals clashed
head-on at tJreenville in a rivalry which matches that of
Harvard and Vale. The Pirates marred AC’s perfect rec
ord by downing them 82-77 before an overflow crowd in
in .Memorial (iym.
Two more lo.sses were to come to the Itulldot’“ before
the regular sea.Kon ended, and they went to the tourna
ment in l.«*xin(fton, seeded No. with a lit :$ record.
Coach Jack .McComa.'’. was a happy man as he cut
down the netft after the (rnme which made the Hulliloiti*
North State Conference Chumps, but he realized that the
work had ju.st bejfun for his boys.
N’ictories in two more irames in the reKional NAIA
playoffs sunt the local lads to Kansar City and thi' NAIA
Tournament. There the Hulldoi;!^. downe<l Kvansville Col-
lefre in their openiii); trunie and bowi-d to Arkansa.s Poly
technic liifltitutu.
Their final overall record, 2:5-7, showed the tremen
dous success that wa.'* enjoyed by our club.
Baseball season came next and .Mc(^)mas welcomed
several veterans back to the team.
The team opvned with a 7-<i los:^ to (luilford whii h
was to be the first of many hard luck losses. Not beinu
able to deliver with men on base was the story in most
of the losses as the KiilldoKs lost several one run decisions.
AlthouRh it wa.s a Kreat season, it was by no means
a flop. The boys looked Kood even in losinK some of thi'
Kames, and they looked impreSi<ive in their victories.
Now, cobwebs will accumulate in the tfym and ifra-'
will Krow on the infield at KleminK Stadium. All will be
(juiet for a while, but the "coaches" will relive every shot,
every foul, every ba.s** hit, and every error of (he
sea.son here at Atlantic Christian-.
