Sixtieth Convocation Held
Convocation services for the 60th
academic session at Atlantic Chris
tian College were held here Sept.
14 with Dr. Millard P. Burt, dean,
presiding.
Speaker for the event was Dr.
Arthur D. Wenger, ACC president,
who told the gathering, “In order
to derive the maximum benefit
from a college experience it is es
sential that we have clearly de
fined purposes. We must under
stand the world in which we live
recognizing the fact that it is not
an ideal world; we must prepare
ourselves for roles of useful lead
ership in that world.
“In college there is no longer
room for a frivolous, lackadaisical
approach to our work. A college
education today represents a sub
stantial investment. No stadent
can afford the luxury of purpose
less meandering through academic
■courses.
“While it is appropriate that we
take stock of the purpose which
has made us a part of this aca
demic community here at Atlantic
Christian College eariy in the year.
it is even more important that we
constantly review those purposes
which motivate our work.
“The chief aim of a college edu
cation is not so much the accumu
lation of factual data; rather, it
is an earnest attempt to illumin-
nate those facts. It seeks to en
able the student to develop a ca
pacity for making intelligent choic
es and sound commitments.
“To this end not only those who
are members of our student body
here but society as well have made
far reaching investments.
“Each of us, whether student or
faculty member, owes it to him
self and to humanity to use wisely
the opportunities which these In
vestments make possible for us.”
'Dr. Wenger was introduced by
Dean Burt, the scripture lesson
and pastoral prayer was by Prof.
W. E. Tucker, the litany was led
by Daniel Hensley. The organ pre
lude and recessional was by Prof.
Gene Featherstone and the bene
diction was given by Prof. Daniel
MacFarland,
