JANUARY 31, 1964 AC Cagers Lose At L-R, Appalachian Atlantic Christian’s Bulldog cagers captured two close decisions in games played since the last edition of the Colegiate and one of the vic tories was over arch-rival East Carolina in a game played in Green ville. In the victory over the Pirates of Coach Wendell Carr, the Bull dogs played their finest game of the year in defeating the Pirates for the first time in four years. Alton Hill led the Bulldog quint with 21 points but more importantly, also captured 15 rebounds to lead both teams in this department. The high scorer for the Bulldogs was Bill Fugate, who pumped 27 points through the nets to increase his already impressive average of 19.8 PPG. In the opening minutes of the game, both teams played the worst kind of basketball imagineable and as a result, only 5 points were scored by both teams in the first 6 minutes of play. Both squads were guilty of bad passes, traveling and other violations which cost them ball possession. However, both crews then began to get untracked and played a fine half of basketball and went to the intermission with the score tied at 42 all, each team hav ing led by as much as five points only to see their opponents whittle away at the lead and eventually go ahead. 0 After the rest period, EC came out and began to slowly build a lead that reached 9 points with about 12 minutes remaining in the game. But the Bulldogs were not to be de nied and fought back to within one at 69-68 with 9:40 showing on the clock when Jerry Ashworth hit a jump shot. They then went ahead on a follow shot by Hill with 9:04 left on the clock and continued to build their lead until it teached 10 points at 87-77 with 58 seconds left on the clock but EC managed to score 6 more points while holding the Bulldogs scoreless to make the final margin only 4 pomts at 89- 85. The contest saw some of the finest shooting anyone could ask for as the Bulldogs shot a torrid 52 per cent from the floor and 65 per cent from the charity line. The Pirates hit 50 per cent from the floor and 60 per cent from the gratis line. Jerry Ashworth led the Bulldogs from the floor as he hit 5 for 5 and also was successful on his only two attempts from the foul stripe. Bill Otte was the big gun for EC as he poured in 30 points to lead both teams in the scoring column, Bobby Kinnard was second high for EC with 18 markers. Against Guilford, freshman Elmer Hobbs came through with his fin est performance of the year as he scored 12 points and pulled off 13 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs fo a 67-64 victory. He also received plenty of help in the scoring de partment as Bill Fugate hit for 23 points to lead all scorers in the game. After having the score tied at ^all after one minute of play, the Bulldogs continued to slowly add to ^eir lead until they went into the oressing room at the half with an eight point lead at 39-31. Fugat was again the hihg point man for AC as he tallied 19 before fouling out with three minutes left in the game. Gary John;on, who was saddled with four personals for most of the second half, added 16 points and Alton Hill contrib uted 12 before he also fouled out. Against Appalachian, The Bulldogs were down by 6 at the halftime Coach Jack McComas took his Bulldogs on the road last weekend for games at Lenoir-Rhyne and Ap palachian State and dropped both contests by narrow margins. The Bulldogs fell before the Lenoir- Rhyne Bears by 72-68 and drop ped an overtime thriller to Appa lachian by 97-90. In the L-R game, the Bulldogs went to the half-time break with a nine point lead at 39-30 but saw that lead disappear quickly in the second half as they lost three men a slow process and a tenacious Guil ford five that refused to be shaken played a very disciplined game and had Alton Hill in foul trouble late in the first half and this proved to be one of the reasons AC could never build a substantial lead. After the intermission, the Quak ers of Jerry Steele started a slow comeback which cut the AC lead to only two points at 62^60 with three minutes left in the game. Gary Johnson, AC’s fine guard, had been forced to leave the game with about six minutes remaining af ter he injured an ankle and he was replaced by Bill Tice, normally a forward. Tice performed well and aided Jerry Ashworth in controlling the ball in the closing minute of play and the game was actually put on ice when Hobbs grabbed a re bound after Ashworth missed a foul shot with less than a minute to play and stuffed it back to put AC ahead by five at 67-62. Guilford then scored a quick bucket and Ash worth and Tice controlled the ball for the remaining 22 seconds. on fouls and had a fourth playing with four personals. The foul situa tion and errors of commission and ommsision played the major role in the downfall of the Bulldogs. The Fugate was again the high point in the number of shots attempted as the Bears shot 80 times from the floor to only 58 for the Bulldogs.
