Here Is A Recap Of ACC’s Golf Encounters
By WALLACE HERRING
To place credit where credit is
^ue let me recap a few of the At
lantic Christian College team per
formances. This year ACC has a
tremendous amount of golfing
ability captured in what we think
is the best golf team in the history
of ACC.
To open up the season Atlantic
Christian blasted away to defeat
Pembroke 15-1. As an opener for
the home boys, they played a good
consistent game under rather moist
weather conditions.
On April 3, 4, and 5 the Wilson-
ACC Invitational Tournament was
played here in Wilson. At the end
of the three day play AC finished
25 strokes ahead of arch - rival
ECC, 35 strokes ahead of St. An
drews, and well over 40 strokes
in front of Lynchburg. Reese Hart
won Medalist honors with rounds
of 75-75-79-229, finishing 7 strokes

Winners will be announced in
May, with the top winner in each
division being flown to Chicago for
presentation ceremonies. A travel
ing exhibition of the winning en
tries will circulate for one year
to museums, schools, libraries, in
dustrial organizations and fairs.
Entries from the Atlantic Chris
tian Art Department are by Jan
Carr of Goldsboro, Marcus Hamil
ton of Lexington, Thomas 0. Johns
ton of Falls Church, Va., Barbara
Llewellyn of South Boston, Va.,
Carolyn Sharpe of Guilford College,
Robert Whitley of North Miami,
Fla., Henry A. Lineberger of Lex
ington, Cecil Davis of Hillsboro and
Ruth Anne Keleher of Wilson.

The BuUdogs took to the raod
against an extremely tough St. An
drews squad, but ACC returned vic
toriously pulling out a 10-8 win.
This was the finest team effort of
the season with all six members of
the squad bringing home points.
Two days later AC was host to
a strong Elon golf team, but once
again ACC’s superior strength shap
ed a 19-5 victory. This was the
match in which the “little man”
from Jacksonville N. C., Gordon
Fulp showed his potential, fashion
ing a 4 over par 76 for medalist
honors.
The Bulldog linsters next victim
was a strong Pfeiffer squad, but
the top four ACC golers coasted
home with another victory winning
medalist honors and four tough
points with a scorching 75, one
shot of which collided against Coach
Cloyd’s head.
The following day the undefeated
Bulldogs traveled to ECC where
they had the misfortune of coming
up against what is called in golf,
“the rub of the green.” A streak
of bad luck and bad breaks and the
black hand of fate demoralized AC
to the unprofessional tune of 17%-
6%. AC’s first four men could
muster but a mere IV2 points. The
AC golf squad plans to avenge
this defeat when they are host to
ECC May 2.
Rebounding from this defeat AC
traveled to Elon where they
squelched Elon 16-8 and defeading
conference champion, Appalachian
17-7. Playing in the number 2 spot

ference champion Austin Adams to

Riding a hot streak ACC traveled
to Pfeiffer where they were again
victorious, beating Pfeiffer 10-6 and
High Point 10^-9%. Reese Hart
put on the best performance of the
year coming home with a one un
der par 70. His round consisted of
five birdies, four of which came
on the back nine where he drove
two of the par fours. He came to
the last hole needing only a par
for a 69, but his tee shot feel short
of the green and he had to scramble
for a bogey four. Hot on his heels
was James “Rufus” Reel who had
a fantastic 73 with three penalty
strokes.
Traveling to Appalachian the next
day, the Bulldogs were faced with a
challenge of the defending confer
ence champions and bent grass
greens. The Bulldogs three put
ted themselves to defeat. The golf
squad had a total of thirty three
putt greens and three four putt
greens as they were defeated 14-10.
Gordon Fulp was medalist for AC
with a fine 76.
It seems a shame that the stu
dents of ACC fail to realize what
a strong and powerful team they
are fortunate enough to have. The
Bulldogs lack the support which
is offered to golf teams that they
have humbled their own courses
and it seems fit that the student
body of ACC should turn out in full
force when the linksters enter
tain ECC here on May the 2. The
golf squad needs only a little en
thusiasm to carry them to the con
ference tournament, where they
have already been picked as co
favorites to win.
