Pushing Rand for his number

The fifth and sixth spots on
Parham’s team are still tossups
By BILLY DIXON
Collegiate Sports Editor
If Atlantic Christian’s basketball Bulldogs are to win big —as
they should — this year, that pcculiarily American institution known
as school spirit will have to rear its ephemeral head around old
Lee Street U.
Success in small college basketball, unfortunately, depends on
home-coiirt success. An integral part of success-at-home is the
support of a frenzied crowd.
2,500 people, screaming their heads off not two feet from the
court, can be quite disconcerting. For the home team, up-liftingly
disconcerting. For the visiting team, disastrously disconcerting.
Support for the Bulldogs in recent years has been less than
frenzied. More like polite. Much of this apathy has arisen from
student disinterest in a team with a reputation of dying about
midway through the season. Of course, A.C.’s cheerleaders aren't
exactly famous for expending great amounts of energy for the most
pubhcized team on campus. Adding to this student-cheerleader
apathy is a relative lack of support from Wilson’s 35,000 residents.
Wilson’s apathy can't be helped. A.C.’s can. For example, the
cheerleaders could arrange a few mass pep rallies on campus the
days of big home games. The cheerleaders could also concentrate
on a few simple but excessively loud cheers during games (noiso
is woe to a visiting team).
Students can alleviate A.C.’s apathy simlpy by using their
privilege of getting into all home games free. The apathy will
vanish as soon as the Dogs start playing their inspiring run-and-
gun game.
PICKS
My first week as a predictor was a crashing success.
Five out of seven right. That’s 71.4 per cent. If this keeps up.
I’ll become a bookie.
My two misses came when Purdue wiped-out Notre Dame, and
Detroit upset Green Bay. Purdue won because Leroy Keyes is un-
although Parham indicated that believable on offense and defense. Who knows why Green Bay has

Wants Winners
Parham, who had admirable
11-6, 13-3, and 14-6 records
in his first four years as coach,
has devoted his practices to
round robin matches to pick-
out the winners on his squad.

form is secondary.” Parham has
been concerned enough about
form, nevertheless, to drill his gjajg Qhio.
lost its magic — this is the first time since 1958 that the Packers
have lost two of their first three games.
One off-the-subject pick before I go into this week’s predictions.
Don’t be surprised if Detroit takes the Series from St. Louis in
seven games.
Now, here are my prognostications:
WILSON FIKE 28, ROCKY MOUNT 10—Fike started late in last
week’s 17-7 win over Broughton. This week, the Cyclones will
start early.
WAKE FOREST 35, MINNESOTA 31—Freddie Summers finally
gets warmed-up.
N. C. STATE 20, S.M.U. 14—Mustang Q.B. Chuck Hixson hit 37
of 69 passes in losing to Ohio State. But he had five intercepted,
all inside the State 20. State, of N. C., will do at least as well as

beginners constantly on their
backhands.
Since Parham’s arival as
coach, A C’s tennis team has
accomplished a great deal with
less than world class players.
MISSISSIPPI 14, ALABAMA 7—Ole Miss will roll back the Tide.
SOUTHERN CAL 24, MIAMI (FLA.) 14—California O.J. is much
better than the Florida variety.
LOS ANGELES 21, SAN FRANCISCO 17—Roman Gabriel will
outfox the 49’ers.
BALTIMORE 31, CHICAGO 21—The return of Johnny Unitas
will spark the Colts over the resurgent Bears.
