Guest Lecturer By RAY GRIFFIN The Adler Deutsch Club played host to Volker Koenig of West Germany on Monday, Sept. 18. Koenig is from the Swabian region of Southern Germany. He is touring the U.S. and will remain here until early October. Koenig spoke primarily of the similarities and differences of American and German societies. For instance, Koenig stated American college students dress more con servatively than do their Ger man counterparts. Varous other topics such as politics, geography and society in general were discussed. Koenig will be in Florida for the next week. After his visit in Florida, he will return to Wilson. On Oct. 4, the German Club will give Koenig a going away party American style. Loenig is certainly an in teresting man to speak with and the German Club has assuredly benefited from his visit. I.I.OYI) BRINSON TOM l) \\ I.S UKATIIKH .IORDAN Students Bid For Officers By LLOYD BRLNSON As a student at Atlantic Christian, 1 see the many good points about this school that elevate it above other educational institutions in this state. 1 also see the points where A.C.C. lags behind. Rather than accentuate the positive areas of ACC, let us discuss the areas that need change. As a candidate for freshman senator, my primary concern is the problems of the students entering college this year. The first of these problems is the rule against freshmen having cars on campus. I expect that there are other reasons for this rule than the lack of lack of parking. Whether the rule against freshmen having cars is meant as a control of morals or as a device for the absorption of students into campus life is irrelevant. The fact is that the rule against freshmen cars is not only an annoyance but also a human issue when it comes to some students, away from home, cannot return for lack of transportation. A new student’s first impression of ACC should not be that of a prison. As to the question of parking, which is an issue to all students as well as freshmen, (as anyone who has had to park a half-mile from campus can testify). I propose not only the addition of more parking lots, but better use of the present ones where cars are parked far enough apart that a few more feet could accommodate another car. The parking at ACC must be improved. Another point I would like to Holshouser Expected At ACC By JOE RAMSEY Jim Holshouser, the G.O.P. Gubernatorial candidate for Governor of North Carolina, will appear at Atlantic Christian College. He will arrive Monday, September 25, at 5:15 p.m. to eat supper and talk with students in the cafeteria. During the hour Mr. Hols houser is here, students are encouraged to express their opinions and ask questions which they feel are important to them. Since this is the first time many students will be voting, Jim Holshouser is concerned with student problems. Problems which include drugs, education, better roads, taxes, and jobs. Jim Holshouser, being only 37- years old, knows the problems of college graduates trying to get a job. He is also troubled that North Carolina has one-of-the- lowest pay scales for teachers in the nation. Mr. Holshouser is an experi enced politician with eight years in the North Carolina House of Representatives and six years as Republican State Chairman. make a stand for is changing the curfew to a later time. I feel that students with the intelligence to enter college are well able to control themselves. The present rewarding. Representing people, namely the freshman students of Atlantic Christian College, is a challenge. I, Heather Jordan, would enjoy accepting the responsibility of such a challenge by being elected as your Senator. My name is Danny Wilkins and I am a candidate for President of the F'reshman Class. I feel that I could represent my fellow students fairly. I know JLM HOLSHOUSER DANNY WII.KLNS curfew is infantile in that a student can serve in the armed forces and can help select the leaders of a nation, but must be in by a certain time. Student responsibilities extend into the classroom. 1 feel that class cuts help academically instead of retard. The time spent in a class that is easy to a student could be better used preparing for a more difficult class. Again, students could have the opportunity to decide for themselves. WITH THESE PROBLEMS, LIFE AT ACC is tough on all students, but especially on freshmen, who must make the transition from home to campus. I believe that as senator I can make the transition easier for all freshmen. Thank you. Heather Jordan For Senator Meeting people is an enjoyable experience. Listening to the ideas of people, whether they be argumentative or agreeable, is Nick Visits ACC By RAY (iRlFFIN Nick Galifianakis brought his senatorial campaign to Atlantic Christian and Wilson Monday. He defeated incumbent B. Everett Jordan in the May primary and is now facing a hard campaign against GOP candidate Jesse Helms. Galifianakis first visited the ACC cafeteria to meet and visit with students. Later that evening he spoke to students and adults at the First Citizens Bank building. The candidate mentioned several major issues but con centrated on tax reform, agricultural reforms, pollution control and drug abuse. Galifianakis seeks the positive solution to the various problems facing the nation. He sees the needs and pushes forward with vigor to find solutions for them. Students who are interested in working for the election of Galifianakis to U.S. Senate please see either Ray Griffin or Robert Cayton. S. JOKY BHKiHT how the students feel that have never held an office because 1 never have. I also believe honesty is the best policy. I have had no formal experience but I will work hard and do my best. I feel that no matter who is elected for office, student government has no power unless backed by the students. I also feel that if there is apathy among the students it will be carried over into the student government. I know I won’t be able to please everyone so I will work for the opinions of the majority of the students. I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Some of the things I would personally like to see happen here at Atlantic Christian are listed below. 1—Stuent evaluations of the professors 2—Unlimited hours for women 3—Unlimited class cuts 4—One pass fail course per student per semester 5—One student representative on the Administrative Board 6—Voting power given to the student representative on the Board of Trustees. These are the expectations I hope to obtain for my fellow students. I would appreciate your support. Tom Davis 1 believe that Atlantic Christian College is basically O.K. However, I do believe that there are some changes needed, such as visitation rights in the dorms and equal rights and responsibilities for women. As it stands now, these are my two main complaints against the See STUDE^T BID Page 1 ■* Next Wednesday elections will be held for Freshman class offices. There are two people aspiring for the office of President and there are three in the running for Senator.
