An opponent, almost always,
has to be superb to defeat a
Pembroke State nine that boasts
highly-touted pro prospect Ron
Norman on the mound.
Atlantic Christian must have
lx.‘en more than that here Friday
night before a slightly surprised
but partisan Bulldogs’ crowd.
Behind the gutty and skilJfuJ
pitching of the Bulldogs' own
left hander, Dallas Arthur, and
timely hitting, ACC shelled the
Braves, 7-0 in a key NAIA
District 29 collision.
The rousing and jubilant
victory halted a brief two-game
Bulldogs’ losing skid and
boosted their District 29 mark to
six wins and three losses. ACC is
10-6 against all foes.
On the other hand, Pembroke
State fell to its first district loss-
in three outings and stands 11-10
on the year. Norman, the
Braves’ sensational left-hander,
saw a personal five-game vic
tory string halted and now
posses a 5-3 ledger.
Numerous pro scouts were on
hand and they might have found
themselves viewing the wrong
left-hander. Arthur was clearly
the sharper in notching his first
victory against one loss.
Arthur spaced six hits and
survived a tendency to be wild
the latter innings. The southpaw
walked four and strick out eight.
Atlantic Christian reached
Norman for seven hits and five
runs in seven innings. The
Braves’ veteran senior walked
one and whiffed nine before
giving way to right-hander Fred
Formichella in the eighth.
Pembroke State ignited the
Bulldogs' endeavors against
Norman with four miscues
which led to four unearned
markers. But, in addition to the
seven hits, ACC batters made
solid contact all night.
Sophomore catcher Donnie
Koontz and electrifying center-
fielder Mike Harrison led the
way with a pair of hits each.
Sophomore first baseman Will
f’lowers singled against Norman
and doubled off Formichella.
Arthur was blessed with an
unexpected one-run cushion in
the opening frame. The fleet
Harrison legged out an infield
hit. The senior flyhawk stole
second and raced to third on a
passed ball. Norman, slightly
shaken, uncorked a wild pitch
which allowed Harrison to score.
Pembroke State had its
chances in the early going and,
when it did not capitalize, Arthur
got tougher in the middle innings
with a blazing fastball and
dipping curve.
Koontz also contributed
defensively by cutting down
runners attempting to steal in
both the second and third in
nings.

The Atlantic Christian golf
team got their revenge against
UNC-Wilmington last week at
Happy Valley golf course when
Coach Cloyd’s team bettered the
visitors by 29 strokes. The
golfers incidently posted their
season’s best total score with a
365 as Tom Barnes led the
assault, followed by Cary Pitt
man, Butch O’Briant, Dennis
Eason and Leigh Taylor.
No. 1 Tom Barnes had the
most bizarre round of the day.
After four holes Barnes was 4
over par, but the Wilson native
finished the front nine, birdie,
birdie, eagle, par, birdie for a
one under par 35. “Tom
Terrific” continued his birdie
barrage on the back side for a 2
under 34 to cap off a sensational
round of 69.
Carey Pittman, playing in the
second spot, also got off to a bad
start, but the Scotland Neck
veteran retaliated to end the
front nine with a 39. Pittman
started the back nine off with a
birdie at the par three No. 10
hole. He then followed teammate
Barnes’ two under par 34 score
on the back nine to record a one
over par 73.
Butch O’Briant equalled
Pittman’s round of 73, but his
nine hole scores were more
consistent. The super sophomore
shot the front nine in 37 and
finished the last nine in even par
36. For his round of 73, Butch had
three birdies.
Dennis Eason, nicknamed
“The Squirt” by his teammates,
played like a tonential downpour
as he shot 37 on both nines.
Eason’s golfing abilities have
left many opponents’ heads
shaking with his overall con
sistency. This quality was
evident as Dennis birdied all the

Cinderman Break Even
The Atlantic Christian College
track team has had a
frustrating, disappointing and
exciting Spring. With all the
rain, injuries and having Spring
Break right in the middle of our
season, Atlantic Christian Track
is greatly improved over last
year’s 0-4 record. At the end of
the regular season, Atlantic
Christian’s record is 3 wins and 3
loses.
We have won and will do well
in the district and conference
because of our good depth. We do
however, have several out
standing people. A very great
addition to this year’s squad is
Robbie Cook. Robbie has
jumped 6’6” and set the school
record twice this spring. Fresh
man Triple Jumper Vernon
Kelley before pulling a muscle,
jumped 43’ 6” consistently.
Junior Transfer Allen Reynolds,
called “lighting” by his team
mates has burnt many op
ponents with his blazing speed.
Another Junior Transfer is
Richard Peacock, he has proven
durability and has addeci
tremendous strength to our 100.
220 and jump teams.
The teams leading scorer is
Mr. John Midgette. Jotin has
won 6 first places, 5 seconds and
3 thirds. His best performance
has been a 23.0 in the 220 and 20'
9” in the long jump.
Jerry Minton, Danny Smith
and Ron Bowen are three men
who have played important roles
in tfie A.C.C. rise to power.
Men who hold the future to
Atlantic Christian Track Power
are; Robbie Cook, Shot Put:
David Lee, Javelin: Bill
Downum, Triple Jump: Vernon
Kelly, 440 Intermediate Hur
dles: Bill Poteat and Sprint
Core; Allen Reynolds, Richard
Peacock and Jim Adams.
Atlantic Christian College
Track is vastly improved,
are building for Tomorrow with
the Emphasis on Today.
