PAGE FOUR THE COLLEGIATE Speaking Of Sports By Leigh Taylor Klon Boxes With Hulldogs' Boolers The Fighting Christians of Klon missed communion ceremony two weeks ago, so they decided to take blood from the Bulldogs soccer squad in last week's match. Two players for each team were thrown out of the game due to unnecessary roughness. The fights originated when some of Elon’s players, who happened to be rejected football castoffs, decided to take matters into their own hands or feet. The score for the two fights, ACC 1, Elon 1, which just hap pened to be the tally for the match also. The Bulldogs scored their first goal in the first half when an Elon player fouled Dave Wells in the penalty area. Chris Small wood scored his second penalty shot of the season and his fifth goal overall as he drilled the white leather ball past the frozen Elon goalie. The second half began with more unsportsman-like conduct until it erupted when ACC’s Brad Church was pushed from behind First Annual Sports Day The first annual Men’s In terdormitory Association Sports Day was held Saturday, October 26, 1974, with Hackney II as the ultimate winner. In all, about 70 members of the three teams competed for first place trophies in the ten scheduled events. Hackney I was led by Richard Brooks who totaled eight points with a 1st place in Chess and a 2nd place in pool. Hackney II’s point leader was Carlos Ebron who tallied eight points with a 1st in singles ping pong and a 2nd in singles badminton. Caldwell Hall was led by Richard Starritt who had a 1st in pool and was a member of the first place bowling team. Additional winners include the following: Tom Powers (Hac I) — bowling, Jimmy Cobb (Hac I) — Checkers, Powers-Phillips (Hack I) — ping pong doubles, Hiekman-Whitfield (Hack II) — badminton doubles, Ray Jackson (Cald) — MVP basketball, William Whitfield Football Ends Three Tie Intramural football for 1974 has ended in a three way tie between Sigma Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Delta Sigma Phi. Each team will receive a trophy at the end of the year. In the final games of the season, underdog Sigma Pi upset the Sig Eps, 6-0 before one of the biggest crowds in recent football history. The lone score came with less than three minutes left in the final quarter as Pi quarterback Joseph Bright plunged in from the one yard line. Also, the Delta Sigs came from behind to defeat Day II 13-7. The Day team drew first blood in executing a statue-of-liberty- halfback-option pass from Rich Wingfield to Steve Van Huss for a 50 yard TD. However, the Deltas evened the score in the third quarter, and finally won it in overtime on a 30-yard pass to Martin Hagwood. In all, it was a day well- played, and a much enjoyed day by all participants. For those who did not compete — look forward the Second Annual Men’s Interdormitory Sports Day next October. by an Elon “red neck”. While Church and the Elon players performed their cha cha dance, both benches chose partners to help out. At this point an un identified Elon player crossed the path of Coach Dave Adkins and verbally assaulted him. The Battle of Armageddon was somehow stopped and play resumed until Mike Southward was pushed without cause. Mike revenged his foul and was quickly escorted from the field. The only consolation for Southard was knowing that he has potential to be a top flite sparring partner for a heavyweight boxing contender. With 13 minutes to play, Elon slipped a goal past goalie Bill Moore, The Bulldogs took 21 shots at the opposing goalie as compared to seven shots by the Elon front line. Steve Sellers and Chuck Rierson were hampered by ankle injuries and Dave Wells’ upset stomach didn’t help the ACC effort. Mike Hickman, a senior from Virginia Beach, displayed his usual all-around game by hustling up and down the field all day. Mike was aided defensively by Larry Barker’s tenacious play. The last game of the season will be the Homecoming match against St. Andrews. The match will be held at Cavalier Terrace park beginning at 2:00 on Saturday, November 2. Louisburg Squeezes Past Volleyball Girls Last week Coach Carole McKeel’s volleyball team thought they were in the Everlasting Bonfire as the Devil himself viewed the action in Louisburg’s broiling gym. The Bulldogs grappled throughout the first game, but Louisburg’s paid referees saw to it that their employer would get the favoring judgement. However, the ACC girls didn’t give up until they lost 15-13. In the second game, the Bulldogs play became even more frustrated. Louisburg lucked out another 15-13 win to capture the match and send ACC to its third loss against seven wins. High scorer for the Bulldogs was Debbie Purvis with 11 points. Carolyn Stevens had six points and Jan Divene finished with four points. The JV team won the third match to remain undefeated. Debbie Purvis’ younger sister, Kathy, was high scorer with 12 points followed by Mary Loj, Bunting with eight points. Capbell Soups Girls Tennis Team Mrs. Barbara Smith’s netters lost another close match last week and this time it came from the Rockets of Campbell. This was the fourth time that the girls have lost 3-6. Joan Adams shelled Marv Jean Rigsbee 6-3, 6-1 to capture her eighth win in singles this year. This was the fourth time in two years that a Campbell No. 1 girl has lost to “Jolting Joan.” No. 2 Tricia Cloyd won her third singles match of the season as she whooped the heck out of Joan Shaffer. Tricia’s blitzkrieg of tennis showmanship lasted for only 13 games as she won 6-1, M. The remaining singles mat ches for ACC were all lost, but most of the contests were close. Denise Wineman lost 6-7,6-1,3-1. Bridget Long was deprived of victory 2-6, 2-6. No. 6 Kathy Pheiffer was defeated 1-6 and 0- 6. Adams and Cloyd won the only doubles match as they beat Rigsbee and Edwards 8-0, Wineman and Pheiffer almost pulled out another win but they lost 6-8.
