NOVFAARFR 1974 NUMBER TWELVE Bulldog Power Xli Basketball season is nigh and everyone knows that it is quite an important event here. Our team has come to deserve our utmost support and the many hoarse throats received each morning after a game. According to Coach Ben Pomeroy each successive season is getting stronger and better spirited. Coach Pomeroy believes that this year's season will be even stronger. A very promising roster this year along with a great increase in publicity (including radio broadcasts) are main factors which will make our school the best this year. The main determinant of a successful season this year can be the easiest to obtain w ith the most lasting results. Coach Pomeroy and the team are counting on imr support this year and (itir enthusiasm to again make imr season the best ever. Last year's support and strength helped to make our team a power in the conference. The few games that were lost were only by a slight margin. Once again we are called upon to give our team the very im portant support it deserves. KANDY HOLOMAN Concert To Be Held More News For The VA Few of the 727,000 veterans and servicemen enrolled in GI Bill college courses this fall will need tutorial help, but the Veterans Administration will pay for it if needed. VA Regional Office Director H. W. Johnson said that the program provides for payment of tutoring costs, not to exceed $50 in any month, up to a maximum of $450. The benefit is not charged against the veteran’s or servicemen’s basic edication entitlement, Johnson pointed out. Any post-secondary trainee is eligible if he trains half-time or more and has a deficiency in a subject required in an approved program of education. In order to receive payment for tutorial assistance, Johnson advises eligible GI Bill trainees to complete a VA application Pi Gammu Mu Travels The N. C. Zeta Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the national social science honor society at A.tlantic Christian College, recently sponsored a trip to the Southern Historical Association which met in Dallas, Tex. for four days. During the trip, the group consisting of eight students and a faculty member visited historical points of interest in Birmingham, Montgomery, Ala., New Orleans, Fort Worth, Tex., Jackson and Vicksburg, Miss., and Atlanta. Students were able to hear and meet authors of many of their books and obtain an insight into professional organization. They viewed book displays, learning of the many books available in various areas. Students participating were Paula Brigman of Fayetteville, Greg Brown of Wilson, Patricia Harris of Sims, Shelia Little of Stantonsburg, Billy Overton of Henderson, Elly Rijnbeek of Utrecht, Netherlands, Martha Todd of Aulander and Haywood Watson of Kenly. Mrs. Sarah B. Gattis, associate professor of history at the college, ac companied the group. and have it certified by the school. Applications should be sent within a year of the tutoring to the VA Regional Office which has the veteran’s claim folder. Only college trainees are Research Opportunities The National Research Council (NRC) announces the Postdoctoral Research Associateship programs for 1975. These programs provide scientists and engineers with opportunities for postdoctoral research on problems in the fields of Atmospheric & Earth Sc iences—Chemistry- Engineering—Environmental Sciences—Life Seicnes— Mathematics—Physics—and Space Seices. Appointments are awarded on a competitive basis and are open to recent recipients of the doctorate and in some cases to senior investigators. Applications deadline is January 15, 1975, with an nouncement of awards in April. Since it became available in March 1970, 48,000 trainees have received tutorial assistance at a cost of $4.7 million. More than 11,700 veterans ana servicemen were released from liability for their GI loans last fiscal year, and the Veterans Administration is urging others to request releases when new purchasers assume loans on homes bought with GI loans. As soon as a purchaser agrees to assume a GI home loan, the veteran-seller should apply for a release from the VA office which guaranteed the loan, Johnson advised. Miss Phyllis Lee Mayo of Stantonsburg, will be presented in a senior voice recital by the Atlantic Christian College Department of Music, on Monday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m., in Howard Chapel, on the college campus. A dramatic soprano, she is the daughter of Mrs. Jerry M. Mayo of Stantonsburg. She is a music education major studying under J. Ross Albert. The program will consist of songs by baroque composer Henry Purcell, impressionist Claude Debussy and 19th cen tury composers Johann Strauss and Luigi Arditi. Highlights will include the “Liebested,” from WaNER'S “tristan und Isolde;” the “Crucifixion Aria,” from “The Saint of Bleecker Street,” by Menotti; and Samuel Bar ber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915.” Her accompanist for the evening will be Miss Elizabeth Tippett of Washington, N.C. Assisting in the program will be Mrs. Thelma Sasser and Marvin Uimb, members of the ACC music faculty and student Michael Lancaster. While a student at Saratoga Central High School, Miss Mayo attended the Governor's Sch(X)l of North Carolina to study in the area of choral music. She was selected to tour Europe as a singer with America's Youth in Concert in 1971. At Atlantic Christian she is active in the Vocal Ensemble Notice!! Married Students Pi Gamma Mu will sponsor a workshop for married students next semester. It will deal with those problems peculiar to married students, such as finance and time scheduling. The leader for the workshop will be Ms. Merlye Swicegood, N.C. State Home Extension Office, whose doctorate is in family management. If you are in terested in participating in this Friday evening through Saturday morning workshop to be held on campus next spring, please give your name to Mrs. Gattis in the Social Science Dept, or call Mary Lou Steed, 291-2940. Minimum registration of 10 couples is required for this event to be held. and Music Theatre and is a soloist with the college choir. She is a recipient of a music honor scholarship at the college, a member of Alpha Chi national honor scholarship society, and was recently named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.” She presently serves as organist and choir director at West Nash United Methodist Church.
