Students to Direct
The efforts of five student
directors, two student design
ers, and a host of actors and
actresses will be on display in
Howard Chapel, Tuesday and
Wednesday, March 30 and 31,
at 8 p.m.
Tuesday night’s bill includes
three comedies. Jessie Pierce
has chosen to direct "The
Marriage Proposal” by Anton
Chekhov. In this classic farce, a
wealthy hypochondriac works
up the nerve to propose to the
local farmer’s daughter. Star
ring are David Cash, Chris
Coats and Randy Craig.
Robert Worton will direct the
parody "If Men Played Cards
As Women Do” by the world-
famous comic playwright
George S. Kauffman. The cast
includes Steve Ballentine,
Robbie Gray, Hugh Johnston
and Alan Winstead.
The final play on Tuesday is
another Chekhov play, "The
Boor.” Alan Winstead directs
this farce about a confirmed
bachelor who meets his match in
a mournful widow. The cast
includes Becca Culpepper,
Stephen Gray, Hugh Johnston,
Mac McKee and Kevin Rouse.
All three of these plays are
being designed by Gilda Gaskill.
The two plays to be presented
on Wednesday night might be
called dark comedies. Frank
Allen Silverthorne who is direct
ing "The Golden Fleece” by
A.R. Gurney Jr., calls it "a
tragic comedy about modem
marriage.” Set against the
background of the legend of
Jason and Medea, a modern
couple discovers that their own
relationship is not as sturdy as
they thought.
As the finale of the evening.
Bob Poole is directing Harold
Pinter’s "The Lover.” a play
"of sexual fantasies.” The
characters Sarah and Richard,
played by Patti Fahling and
Scott Robertson, find their way
to a fuller relationship because
of the events depicted in the
play. Steve Ballentine appears
as John.
Both of these plays are being
designed by Jessie Pierce.
The five plays will give audi
ences the chance to see many
different styles of theater.
Curtain time is 8 p.m. for two
evenings of one-act plays in
Howard Chapel, Tuesday and
Wednesday, March 30 and 31.
