Page Four THE BENNETT BANNEE May, 1934 CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS the PAUL KOBESON PLAYERS The Paul. Eobeson Players have again reached the terminal of a well-spent year. The members feel that the accomplishments were both entertaining and enlightening. Drama has taken a new position in their lives and appreciation has been heightened. De sires have been stimulated for writing and presenting original plays and especially those of Negro setting. It is readily being realized that drama ranks next only to music in the talents of the Negro. Next year will mean a fulfillment of the mere beginnings of this year. The club hopes to do more playwriting, produce more interest in others for drama, and to push upward to bigger things. Officers for next term are: Esther Pickett, re-elected president; Cozette Friende, vice- president; Batrice Suggs, business manager. These new officers, bearing in mind the ideals held by the former officers of the Sunday school, set as their goal the interpretation of finer and better lives through the Sunday school organization. This organization has not reached the stage of maturity, so to sp^k, but it is in the process oT growth. May it continue to grow until the set goal is reached. In order for this organization to grow, we realized that the programs and the various discussions would play a major part. Eealiz- ing this point, several persons were invited to lecture on various phases of the Christian life. We are very grateful to several mem bers of the faculty who kindly consented to review the lessons on Sunday mornings. We wish to extend our appreciation to the faculty members who taught the various classes. The Sunday school has also tried to stimu late a better appreciation for music by organ izing a choir. We wish to thank the mem bers of the choir also for the interesting Christmas and Easter programs which they rendered. As has already been stated, the goal has not been reached. May the organization con tinue to live and to grow. The new officers for next school years are: Superintendent, Paulino Jones; assistant su perintendent, Mary Stone; secretary, Mamie Hearn; treasurer, Priscilla Jordan. May these new officers go to their tasks wil lingly and in so doing make the organization iii every w’ay a better one. P. J- « ♦- THE TASTE AND BASTE CLUB The Taste and Baste Club looks forward to a new year of much success. The ofllcei'S for next year are: President, Esther Pickett; vice-president, Alniira Henry, secretary, Anne Porter, and treasurer, Susie Jenkins. The Glass Presidents Speak A JOLLY YEAR FOR THE JUNIORS This years with the Juniors has meant a number of gallant and gay activities; not of the trifling sort, but of the type that makes real accomplishments possible. The class has made strenuous efforts to make itself a pride of the campus through the development of personality traits. Schol arship has been one of its outstanding goals. If you havei noticed the honor roll, I am sure you realize that we have held a big portion of that list throughout the year. The class has lent a unanimous support to the religious, financial and social programs of the campus and has accepted every responsibility with im measurable fidelity. The program committee has, through class discussions and entertain ment, brought us nearer to national, state, and local problems. We boast of having among us members of the champion basketteers, the quartette, the dramatic clubs, the Bennett Banner, and the Y. W. C. A. cabinet. So we bring our scholastic spirits to a close with the traditional Junior-Senior “Prom” (only a little better) and a final appearance Campus Illumination night. The president wishes to express a sincere appreciation to the other officers and members for their 100 per cent co-operation. Many thanks to our adviser, the former Mias Bertie Jones, who recently tripped for a grand M. P. S. We wish for her many years of happiness. With the newly-elected officers, the Juniors are all set to plunge into the imperial dignity of Seniorhood. Three rollicking cheers for the Juniors P. C. W., ’35. THE SOPHOMORES You will recall that we are referred to as “The Wise Ones,” “Those Sophs,” and the like. And these, and more, we have received all year; but wo have taken it good-naturedly and have not let it arouse us at all. We liave enjoyed our classification and have no regret in allowing the “Frosh” to take our places next year as we advance to the rank of Juniors. In our class meetings, during the first semester we very often had a few minutes left after attending to our little business matters, and so we used them in singing school songs, playing games, etc. But, oh, when the second semester arrived we never had a minute over. Why? Because th annual Sophomore week end party was approaching and you bet that kept us trotting at a rather gay speed until April 30. We are very glad to have been hostess to such a large group of girls. When they left, some of the Sophomores remarked that it was so lovely on the campus with the girls that (Continued on Page Seven) THE GLEE CLUB (Singing Along the Way) The Bennett College Glee Club has been a very successful organization during the past and present school years. This year there are 41 voices, and to compare their record with previous years will show that the Glee Club is accomplishing its purposes; namely, to acquaint its members with music of great masters, to develop good tone qual ity, expression, interpretation and a sense of rhythm. During the absence of the director. Miss Marylou Jackson, for the first semester Miss Gladys Thomas did very good work with the Glee Club. Special musical programs were rendered in the city at different churches. There was, also, a most inspiring Christmas program given that was appreciated by all people. The beginning of the second semester l)rought l)ack the former director. Miss Mary lou Jackson, who had returned from her study in New York City. Miss Jackson brought back a book of Spirituals which were arranged by her for female voices. Everyone was glad to greet her and to begin another semester of hard work with Miss Jackson as dirctor and Miss Thomas accompanist. In the beginning of the spring season the Glee Club began touring. They toured the state of North Carolina and some parts of Virginia. On these tours they sang many of the Spirituals arranged by the director. They were always appreciated and evoked hearty applause from the audiences. The Glee Club climaxed its activities for the year with its annual concert on May 5th, honoring the Board of Trustees. The former students of the Glee Club also participated in this concert, making it a chorus of 50 voices. To our regret, the present Senior class is taking four members from the Glee Club: Misses Juanita Pope, Maidre Euth Gamble, Grace Coulbourne, and Mrs. Jessie L. Dick son, the last three being members of the first quartette also. J. A. C., ’35.
