Committee Off Track
By BEVERLY COOK
Unity is the answer to a fine, well put together organization. Yet
this element seems to be lacking in the Freshmen Steering Committee.
Even though, the existence of this committee is soon to be terminated,
the pattern already set by said committee has doomed the Freshmen
class to complete entropy, unless something is done about it soon.
The internal battle between the officers of the Steering Committee
for the power and control of the Freshmen class, consequently, em
bedded in many of the freshmen diversity. This battle brought about a
lot of partial opinions and confusion amongthe freshmen, thus result
ing in a split of the class into several directions. This can be clearly
8«en if you look at the number of candidates running for President,
Secretary, and Treasurer. The number of candidates running for these
offices, )rtll undoubtedly split the class and give way to mass disor-
^ng^atti’tude to take, but knowing it’s the wrong attitude and doing
something about it are two entirely different things. The time is
“NOW” for the Freshmen class to unite. So, Pfeiffer, Jones, and
Barge get together, not as individual dorms, each uniting together
against the other, but as three dorms combined as one. Remember
unity is the answer to a well-organized establishment.
Hats Off To Union Board
By SANDRA WILSON
Hardy congratulations are in order for the menfcers of the Student
Union Board. The weekly Tuesday morning KaffeeKlatschhas been a
tremendous success. Many intriguing ideas have been exchanged over
the coffee and doughnuts served. Perhaps these refreshments have
been an impetus to arouse students to attend, but no matter what the
motive, the most important thing is the interaction between students
and faculty#
Of course the underlying implications of the Kaffee Klatsch are
far more important than the activity that takes place. It represents
the beginning of a sound basis of communication between faculty,
students, staff, and administration. This communication must not
take place not only at the hour designated for the Kaffee Klatsch, but
must be maintained at all times. Upon this foundation all great insti
tutions are built. This is the goal that makes the success of the
an overall success for the college.

What Do You Think About The Extra
30 Minute Curfew For Freshmen?
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1968
Martin Luther King
By HAZEL JOHNSON
Did you know that Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. spoke at Ben
nett College in February of 1958?
It's quite true; he was here as.
a guest lecturer.
His general question of dis
cussion was; “Has there been
any progress in race relations?”
which he began by outlining these
three general concepts of feel
ings: .
1. The extreme optimist says
“We’ve come a long, long way.”
2. The extreme pessimist says
“We have a long, long way to
go.”
3. The realist combines the
two “ “We have come a long,
long way and we still have a
long way to go,”
He expounded from here on
the responsibilities of the Ne
gro. “We must first convince
ourselves that we are men, then
begin to act. Walk together chil
dren, don’t cha’ get weary.
There’s a great camp meeting
in the promise land~of freedom
and justice.”
After these words of encour
agement, he concluded with; "The
days ahead are filled with many
challenging opportunities, but
these opportunities are only
meaningful to the degree that we
meet them with courage and bold
determination to make the idea
of brotherhood a reality. He who
complacently adjusts himself to
segregation is not only irres
ponsible but ultimately immor
al.”
Dorm Talk
Which Shall It Be
A large segment of the Bennett family has expressed deep concern
over the infrequent publication of the “Bennett Banner.” From this
it would seem that this group would like to see the publication on an
artistic and continuing basis.
While this would be by no means a miraculous feat, it does have Its
drawbacks under the present situation. Publishing a school newspaper
is a slightly larger job than some seem to realize. It requires dedi
cation, zeal, ingenuity, along with a considerable amount of time.
When these things are combined, the result is a first-rate work ol
art, something of which all can be proud.
This, the first edition of the re-birth of the “Banner” was not by
any means an easy task. There were problems with recruiting and
retaining staff members until recently when a number of underclass
men (Freshmen) came in to breathe new life into an enterprise that
was practically dead.
It is hoped, also, that some other members of the family that have
demonstrated the ability to write will get the urge to come forward
and do so. There are few rewards so large as seeing one’s own writ
ings in print. With the magnitude of programs, activities, and per
sonalities always prevalent at Bennett, there is no reason why the
“Bennett Banner” should not be a dynamic, informative, useful tool
of the Bennett community. It can be as resourceful or dormant as the
students make it. Which shall it be?

When girls get together, al
most any subject is discussed.
For instance, during the course
of a conversation, we found that,
according to school rule, visit
ing hours for the guys are from
'TPTS tB 5f3£), Monda-y thrM Fri
day. But quite a few of us unfor
tunates are in class until 5:15,
We calculated that at least five
minutes are wasted trying to get
back to the dorm from class,
which leaves us ten minutes of
marvelous socializing?
And the lucky ones who man
age to get a “caller” end up
taking him to the union where
the campus cop kindly tells him,
“Young men don’t call on young
ladies on Mondays, (or Tues
days, or Wednesdays, or Thurs
days, or Fridays), But we girls
take it all in good humor—wait
ing for the day when we get to
be twenty-one years old and have
a grand 12 o’clock curfew. And,
we’ll be allowed to ride in cars,
too!
Those will be the good ole
days!
Where Lies Answer
By DIMPLES ARMSTRONG ***
Here and there around campus,
there is much discontent among
the students. It can be detected
in every conversation and in
formal “parlay.” What is all the
discontentment about — Almost
everything ~ ranging from so
cial limitations to inconvenient
holidays.
Discontentment usually leads
to frustration; frustration to
built-up-energy that has to find
some type of outlet — be the
outlet desirable or undesirable,
it must be found sometime in
some form. The question is,
When? and How? Right now, there
is no way of predicting what is
to come since human nature is
unpredictable.
Wher^ is the answer? Where
will it all end?
