W Swings Pictured After Their Victory SWINGS SPONSOR BENEFIT GAME BOUTIOUE 134 Senior Clothing Majors at the Boutique On Friday Night, March 23, 1973, the Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Inc. spon sored a swing vs. faculty basketball game. The basketball game was a kick-off in their drive to raise funds to be donated to the Sickled-CeU Anemia Founda tion. The game was very excit ing with scores being close throughout the time. Faculty and Staff participating in the game were: Dr. Boone, Mrs. Adams, Dr. Trobian, . Miss Davis, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. White. High scorer for the evening was Mrs. Adams with 11 points followed by Mrs. Walker and Mrs. White. The Swings participating The Bennett College Music Department sponsored Bra- ham’s “German Requiem” on Sunday night, March 4 in the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chap el. Under the leadership of Mrs. Mary Jane Crawford, a Steering Committee was re sponsible for planning a cen tennial musical program which involved the total Greensboro and surrounding area musicians. “We used mailing lists, con tacted church choirs, and high school groups to get in terested people to participate in such an endeavor,” Mrs. Crawford explained. The committee, itself, was formed of community music leaders which included Rich ard Cox, Director of the Uni versity Chorale at the Uni versity of North Carolina- Greensboro; Mrs. MUrilyn Burris, instructor of Music of the University of North Caro- lina-Chapel Hill; Edward Lowe, Director of the Guil ford College Choir; Dr. Char lotte Alston, Coordinator of the Bennett Music Depart ment; and J. J. Williams, in the game included: Sylvia Freeman, Cheryl Miller, Rox anne Aaron. Valerie Tillman. Darlene Johnson. High scor er for the Swings was Denise Johnson with 11 points, fol lowed by Valerie Tillman, and Darlene Rose. The half-time activities In cluded recognition of those members of the Swing Phi Swing Fellowship who have received honors and introdu- tion of Dr. Trader, chairman cl Greensboro area Sickl- ed-Cell Anemia Foundation. Dr. Trader briefly discussed the importance of Sickled- Cell research. Many spectators were on hand contributing to the fund and watching the students barely beat the faculty 24-23. The Brahm’s work was se lected because the composer addressed himself primarily to the living and to the future instead of the usual requiems which symbolized death and the past. “The Braham’s Requiem is a. pleasing musical work and is befitting to a centennial celebration which is being witnessed by Bennett College this year,” Mrs. Crawford ad ded. The 125-member chorus and 50-piece orchestra was composed of students, faculty, and staff from Bennett, A. & T., Greensboro College, Guil ford College, UNC-G, UNC- Ch, members of local school groups, church choirs, and instrumentalists from area orchestras. Dr. Wendell P. Whalum, chairman of the Music De partment of Atlanta’s More house College, served as con ductor of the Requiem. Dr. Whalum is a noted choral di rector and leading authority in the perpetuation of the Student Government Election Results!!! We vvere very pleased with the signs and we felt that we had many good people running for offices. Al though we know everyone could not be elected we hope that those students not elect ed will continue to work with the elected leaders in trying to make Bennett that much better. We would like to thank those students who volunteer ed their time to work on the polls. The polls were open until about 6:20 p.m. Special thanks go to Elise Bailey and Venessa Higgins who worked even more hours than they had volunteered for. Also we would like to thank Miss M. O. Tucker, without her aid particularly in. the area of typing, we would not have succeeded. We would like to end with a word of advice to the cam pus — you’ve picked your leaders, but they cannot function without your help. Afro-American choral tradi tion. Soprano soloist was Marilyn L. Burris who has appeared as a touring soloist with the North Carolina Symphony. Baritone Soloist was Robert T. Taylor who has sung ex tensively in New York where he studied under Lola Hayes and Gertrude HermanHowell. He has performed through out the country and as a guest soloist in Japan. A reception was held fol- V lowing the performance in the David Dallas Jones Stu dent Union. It you’ve been in the Stu dent Union this semester you might have noticed its new addition. Boutique 134 is operated by the senior home econom ics majirs, as part of their curriculum. In the catalog the course is listed as cloth ing 134 — Internship in Re tailing and Merchandising. In the past those enrolled IVY NOTES Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror ity, Inc. was the first Black women’s Greek letter organi zation. It was founded with the goals of scholarship, lead ership, and community in volvement. AKA has had more than 60 years of ser vice to the community, na tion, and the world but, it does not rest on the past. We the members of AKA believe in Achievement through Knowledge and Action. Zeta Xi Chapter is the Bennett College chapter of AKA. Zeta Xi participates in national, regional, and chap- t’er projects, including Negro Heritage, scholarship, voter registration, job corps, travel grants, and social action. Young ladies who are ma triculating through Bennett, have a sophomore status, and a 2.50 average may become part of the proud heritage of Alpha Kappa Alpha, if she is willing to give herself to service and mankind. Pearl Johnson THINK in the course received on the job training and merchandis ing experience in the local stores. This year Miss Gwen dolyn Sneed their instructqr has arranged with local stores to have merchandise brought to the Boutique so that the students can get the experi ence while remaining on campus. They each will serve approximately 100 hours in the boutique this semester. Palmer Extension Bennett College received a $54,080 planning grant to find some type of innovative pro gram for it’s off campus facil ity, Palmer Institute. A com mittee was created to assist in this task. The committee consists of two rep'esenta- tives frcm each of the five a|-ea colleges and universi ties: G'eensboro College: Mr. Fred Jones, Jr. Rev.
