6 • BENNETT BANNER • NOVEMBER 4, 1993 More students joining Health Center program Robin Walls Banner Reporter More Bennett stu dents are now joining the family planningprogreun de veloped by the Health Cen ter. “More students are be ginning to come to the Health Center because of the program, “ said Cora Wadell director of the Health Cen ter for the past eight years. The goal of the pro gram is to prevent sexually transmitted disease and ill ness. But students who join the family planning pro gram are provided informa tion about birth control methods and the detection of breast cancer as well as receiving an annual pap smear, pregnancy testing, birth control, and immuni zation shots. The program which was started on campus in 1989, meets every Monday at noon in the health center in the Rose Catchings Com plex. Along with Wadell, the staff at the Health Center includes Joann Wil- hams, a nurse and Preston Clairk, the College physician. Dr. Clark gives exami nations on Tuesdays by ap pointment only. Although the program does not offer HIV testing because of expense, students are provided information about the disease. The Health Center has with the Triad Health Project, an organization that provides the community in formation about HIV. The organization also provides support for HIV people in fected with the virus. Though the flu season is approaching fast, the Center does not give flu shots. Wadell says that it may possible for students to receive flu shots from the Health Center within the next few years. The Bennett College indoor track team may be headed for the top with new goals and high expectations to lead them to qualify for the nationals. Bennett College Track Coach Mark Adams hopes to qualify more than one person for track and qualify relay teams in the nation als for the first time. Adams said that he wants the team to move up in the conference from the fourth place ranking during the previous year. The final runners Volunteers needed for phonathon The National Alumnae Phonathon needs faculty, staff and student volunteers now through Nov. 18. Volunteers are asked to work at least one evening to call alumnae to make a pledge. This year's goal is $400,000.
