NOVEMBER 19, 1993 • BENNETT BANNER • 3 New program makes educational goals easier for single mothers Robin Walls Student Reporter Bennett is making it easier for single mothers to attend college while at the same time raising their chil dren. Through Challenge of Opportunity, a single-par ent program implemented by the College’s Health Care Services, mothers will be able to continue their edu cation and enroll their chil dren in the Bennett CoUege Children’s House for early childhood education. Along with being re quired to engaged in appro priate work experiences,.the student-mothers are re quired to participate in a parenting program, a sex education program and in a home management program to leam how to develop and maintain a healthy home en vironment. According to the direc tor of Health Care Servives, Riley Khne, many other op portunities are available for these mothers. "They are provided with bulletin board listings for jobs, career planning as sistance, and transportation to school," he said. Participants are also assisted in coping with and overcoming social, personal, financial and academic bar riers. Financial assistance is available for childcare and education. The program provides tutoring help through video instruction on biology, his tory, research writing, math, and chemistry. “Although I am ineli gible for the program be cause of my educational sta tus, I am happy that Ben nett has made it easier for less fortunate mothers,” said Kimberly Wright, a senior. Shaw said that the need to help women should be a major concern for Bennett since it is a women’s college. “This is a women’s institution and we should consider the needs of women who have obstacles to overcome,” Shaw said. Teacher of the year speaks The North Carolina teacher of the year, Sarah Pratt spoke on “The Value of Teaching” at Bennett Nov. 17. Junior receives North Carolina writers' scholarship Leondra Radford has received a scholarship to attend the North Carolina Writers’ Network Fall Conference in Winston Salem Nov. 19-21. Radford will be joined by fellow students Rochelle Huff, Chilee’ Hailes and Dr. Linda Brown, professor of humanities at Bennett College who will conduct a workshop intitled, “Interviewing: the Challenges of Objectivity” that discusses the book she is cvirrently writing for the College. The Writing Center will help students enhance their writing, style and grammar skills on Monday and Wednesdays from 10 a. m. until noon, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until noon, and on Fridays by appointment. Future physicians sought Future physicians can get a jump start on their career at Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University in Houston. Minority college students and graduates may apply for the Pre-Medical Academy. Admission is based on academic acheivement and interest in the medical careers.
