DECEMBER 13, 1993 • BENNETT BANNER • 3 Productive, busy semester for Social Science Division collegiate crossword LaTasha Gordon Student Reporter The Division of So cial Sciences has been on the move with several dif ferent activities and pro grams this semester. The Division began by welcoming two new fac ulty; Matthew Redinger as assistant professor of his tory, and Yusef Talukdar as associate professor of ac- coimting. Now the division has 14 full-time faculty, and nine hold the terminal de gree in their field of studies. Sixty-four percent of the faculty hold doctorate degrees, making the division closer to the minimum per centage of 70 percent pro posed by the College. Baffour Agyeman- Duah who serves as head of the division ssiid, “My col leagues and I are working hard to strengthen the pro grams of the division. We’ve made a lot of positive changes, but there’s still room for improvement.” Agyeman-Duah, who is also an assistant pro fessor political science, re cently represented the so cial science division of Ben nett College when he pre sented a research paper at the 1993 Intematiimal Stud ies Association Southern Conference at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. He also signed a con tract with the University Press of America to publish his 240-page book dealing with the Cold War policy of the United States arming other countries for proxy activities. Other faculty mem bers are actively participat ing in various programs as weU. Victoria Burke, act ing chair of Social Work and Sociololgy, completed a fac ulty internship with the bureau of Land Manage ment of the Department of the Interior in Phoenix. Micheal Reed, assis tant professor of psychol ogy, served as assistant di rector of the Math Science Scholars Program’s summer camp program here on Bennett’s campus. “This program was a great experience for me and an even greater one for the children,” Reed said. “Some of the kids were clearly turned on to careers in math and sci ence.” The majors in the division are as active as their faculty. Students in the Psy chology Department partici pated in several different summer programs including internships at Bowling Green State University in the Graduate Professional Opportunity Program; NHLBI Behavioral Medi cine in the Department of Epidemiology and CHnical AppUcation; the University of South Carolina Depart ment of Psychology for Ex perimental Psychology; ATTENTION ! ! ! Last spring and sum mer three students in the division served as interns at the White House, two at the Department of State, and one at the U. S. Embassy in Austraha. Two student mem bers of the Political Pacesetters Club accompa nied Daniel Figgins, profes sor of political science,at a meeting with the Voter’s Services Committee. Social Sciences is made up of eight depart ments: Political Science, Economics, Business, So ciology, Social Work, Psy chology, Accounting and History.
