FEBRUARY 24, 1994 • BENNETT BANNER • 3 Scott meets the Cos (Continued from page 1) Scott met with Cosby before his performance. Hailes: Was it hard to get in to see him? Scott: Yes, I have been try ing to meet Mr. Cosby for seven years. I have also been trjdng to get his wife, Camille to come to Bennett, but she has been working on her doc torate degree. However, I fi- nallymetMr. Cosby on the21 of January. I was in New York that day on business. I had a flight scheduled to leave at 3:30 p.m., but there was a fuel leak in the plane and therefore an hour and a half delay. I left New York about 5:19 and landed at 6:15, got home and changed and tried to be in to see Mr. Cosby by 7:40. After being stuck in a trafi&c accident on the way and being stuck in coUseimi traffic, I finally made it back stage to meet with Mr. Cosby. He had not arrived yet, so everj^hing worked out fine. When I walked into his dress ing room Mr. Cosby asked who was I and he commented that I was looking pretty. I found Mr. Cosby to have a wonder ful sense of humor. He in sinuated that I was comingto beg. I quickly told him that I was there to do just that. He inquired about the serious ness of the students and the dedication of the faculty and staff. He had already heard about our single parent pro gram and wanted to know more about it. He told me that Camille (Cosby’s wife) has a great interest in help ing the community. He also said that she is the person that I need to speak with be cause she distributes the money. He asked if we had and auditoriiim and I said yes, but I did not comment on the size. He told me that if I could get seven or so people to come down he would come back and give a benefit show without charging us. Ms. Rhue, PR person for Bennett, brought in a sweatshirt for him and a plaque to honor him for his service as a con scious humanitarian for com munity service. Hailes: Dr. Scott, do you feel colds, flu “AU you can do is make sure that your are drinking plenty of juices and water,” she said. “Many times the pa tients come in here and say that they have not had any thing to eat or drink all day. They do not eat very regu larly or drink fluids much.” “Stress can be a con tributing factor to illness, but it mainly has to do with the general contact that is made among a lot of people, and how actively a germ is trans mitted. A multivitamin can never be a substitute for a balanced meal, but if you are a person who does not eat regularly, then taking a vita min would help,” Williams said. The Health Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a nurse on call every night after 7. Chi and I intend to further the progress that the Ben nett College psychology de partment has begun.” Play (Continued from page 1) Although the play is a celebration of Black History Month, according to Franklin, February is not the only time they celebrate. “We teach Black His tory everyday of every year because it is the most impor tant thing a child can learn,” Franklin said. that your meeting was suc cessful and that he was re ceptive to you? Scott: Well, we have the lines of communication open and we are working to put together the benefit. We are hoping that the benefit will be successful, and we are also looking to acquire a donation to the college by the Cosbys. Hailes: Is it hard to get support firom celebrities? Scott: Well, in order to get people interested in helping us, we must first show them reason why they should help us. For example, if each of the students here were to maintain at least a C aver age, that would make Ben- Roots Rockin' Produc tions is sponsoring a scholar ship drive to benefit the Mass Communications Department at Bennett. HaUes: Dr. Scott, 1 am aware that when you took office after the leadership of Dr. Isaac Miller, the college had a large debt, has that been cleared? Scott: You know that was one of the first things that Mr.Cosby asked me. He said, “How much do you need to get out of debt?” I was happy to report that Bennett College does not have a debt. When I came in 1987 o\ir debt was $1.10 million and that was cleared in 1990. 19" color telvision and second prize is a VCR. Cold weather breeds By Stephanie McCorkle Banner Reporter Colds. Everyone has had at least one in their lifetime or, the past six months. With change able weather and high stress in the atmosphere, getting sick seems to be unavoidable. The Health Center, lo cated in Rose Catchings Com plex has seen people with these problems more than fi*e- quently. “The average number of students who have come in with colds have increased at a ratio of fifteen to twenty per week. That comes to about five people a day more or less,” said JoAn Williams, registered nurse at the Cen ter. Williams said that there was an increase of people coming in with sore throats, as well as different combina- Psi Chi (Continued from page 1) were members of the Psi Chi chapter at N.C.
