Well here’s your chance. The 1994 Black History Essay contest, sponsored by the Lee Education Program is accepting 1,500-word essays featuring the contributions of out standing blacks Americans. Journalism students attend minority job fair Four Belles majoring in mass commimications attended a minority job fair in Birmingham, Ala. Feb.17-20. LaTasha Gordon, Orangeburg, S.C. sophomore; Christine Lewis, Wash ington, D.C. junior; Stephanie McCorkle, Raleigh junior; and Kaetina Davis, Columbia junior joined more than 150 other students from colleges and vmiversities and more than 40 newspaper recriiiters. The BeUes were inter viewed for internships by such notable newspapers as the St. Petersb\irg Times, The Birmingham News, the Associated Press and The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. The job fair was sponsored by “The Birmingham News,” the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and the Newspaper Association of America. Other sponsors of the event included the “Atlanta Journal and Constitution,” The New York Times Regional Group and the Southern Newspaper Association. UNCG, Bennett to co-sponsor women’s health conference “Women, Science and Health: Breaking vsdth Tradition,” will be the topic of the women’s studies conference Friday, Feb. 25. The conference is jointly sponsored by the Bennett College Women’s Leadership, Development, and Training Program and UNCG’s the Woman’s Studies Program., and other local organizations. Keynote speakers vnll be Dr. Nancy Tuana , philosopher, University of Texas and Dr. Agnes H. Donahue, director. Greensboro mayor speaks at National Trio Day celebration Mayor Carolyn Allen spoke at the National Trio Day ACES Feb. 10. Allen spoke on diversity in educational partnerships for the fiiture. Also in attendance were city councilwomen Alma Adams and Yvonne Johnson, who is also a Bennett graduate. Founder of African American history museum visits Dr. Margaret Burroughs, the founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History visited the campus of Bennett College during the week of Feb 19. She attended an opening reception which was held at the Greensboro Cultural Center, a symposium that focused on black aesthetics and an evening of public speaking that was held in Black Hall. Law school prep program sponsored The National Institute for Legal Education is sponsoring its 1994 siunmer intensive Law School Prep Program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Ca. (Jvme 26 to July 8 ) and American University in Wash., DC (July 16 to July 28). N.I.L.E. offers one -week and two-week programs for residential and commuter students. National Library of Poetry announces contest The National Library of Poetry will sponsor its North American Poetry Contest The deadline will be March 31. There is no entry fee and the contest is open to everyone.To enter, send one original poem to the National Library of Poetry, 11419 Cronridge Drive, P.O. Box 704-YD, Owings Mills, Md. 21117. The poem should be no longer than 20 lines. The poet’s name and address should appear at the top of the page.Entries must be post marked by March 31. Comer program helps ‘‘raise a child’’ By Crystal Simenton Banner Reporter The Education De partment has come across a possible opportunity to col laborate with the Guilford County School system to as sist in educating community children. The opportunity is called the Comer Project. The Comer Project, started at Yale University by Dr. James P. Comer in 1968, is based on the African prov erb: “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” According this phi losophy, a child needs more than teachers to be educated. A child’s complete education involves participation from parents andthe business com- mimity. This participation promotes collabaration, builds and bridges relations, and the impowers all constituants involved said Dr. AHce Stone, Education De partment chair. The participation helps students considerably. “It enhances student perfor mances,” Stone said. The Comer project in volves six critical pathways in the development and grovfth of a child. Intellectual growth, emotional develop ment, moral ethics, social in teractive, speech and Lan guage, and physical grovrth. According to Dr. Stone the children involved are usually elementary stu dents but the Comer project has been tried in middle schools as well as high schools. The project — made up of parents, staff, and com munity businesses — forms a committee that meets as often as needed, holds dis cussions about the welfare ATTENTION ! ! !
