MAY 9, 1994 • BENNETT BANNER • 3 Aid office visits dorms to inform Christine Lewis Banner Reporter After semesters of panicking, complaining and screaming about loans, scholarships and other types of aid, the students have been shown the hght at the end of the financial aid tun nel. The financial aid of fice alleviated most of those problems with “Finsmcial Aid AwEireness Week,” an innovative idea developed by Dr. Joseph L. Morale, new dean of enrollment manage ment. The program, which involved a week-long series of workshops designed to as sist the students in helping with the financial aid pro cess took place in the dormi tories. “We want the students to have a better understand ing (of the financial aid pro cess,” Morale said, “so my staff and I decided to be come more involved with the students, so we took it right to their dorms.” The staff scheduled the week (March 14-18)prior to the students Spring Break to be the awareness week, becaiise according to Morale, that is the usual time when parents are taking some time out to file their taxes and fill out forms. In addition, the staff believes that this will be the perfect chance for the stu dents to get their informa tion completed for their aid correctly and in a timely fashion. During the week- long program the students learned about all funds that they are entitled to receive and give a more general un derstanding of the process required to obtain in receiv ing those particular funds, grants, or scholarships. “I was very im pressed by the enthusiasm shown by the students par ticipating in the workshops,” said, Christine Evans, asso ciate director of financial aid. Miesha Rice, a sophomore from Baltimore said, “ The Bertice Berry Show was the experience of a lifetime. Everyone had an opportu nity to express themselves on television and at the same time have fun.” That show is sched uled to airMay6, atlOa.m. on an ABC channel. Stephanie Carrino, a speech instructor in the de partment, was a chaperone during the trip. “The trip was educa tional, worthwhile, and a lot of fun,” Carrino said. “Based on the vol- tmie of questions asked by our students, it certainly points out the need for con tinued outreached pro grams,” Evans said. “I believe that Chris and Stephanie have done a wonderful job on bringing this office to this level,” Mo rale said. “They’ve put a lot into this personally, and they have done great things for the office.” ‘We intend for this to be an annual event,” Mo rale said. “I am confident we have set the stage for great things.” President Gloria R.
