SEPTEMBER 29, 1994 • BENNETT BANNER • 3 Belle Sports Five freshwomen key players this season Cinzia “Buffy’ Sports Editor Atkinson A veteran is an experienced player that usually takes the ini tiative to be a leader. This year’s Bennett volleyball team consists of five freshwomen. All of which will be taking leadership roles in the progressing season. The Belles broke even with a win over arch rival Livingstone College after losing the season opener with a setback from visit ing Johnson Bible College from Knoxville, Tenn. Freshwomen Rebekah Melton, Antrionette Pittman, and Christina Savoy gave an outstanding first year perfor mance. Melton, Savoy, and Pittman were the only three freshwomen that received an ample amount of playing time, but the others, like Rukiyah Abdulah and Latoya Davis, are just as excited about being aparlof acollegiate volley ball team. Melton, a 5’8" freshwoman fromSaunton,Va., has been play ing volleyball since the eighth grade. Although injured on a play in the final match against Johnson Bible College, this Robert E. Lee High School standout was just as excited sidelined as she was on the floor. “It was intense out there , but it was fun,” Melton said. Pittman, who has not played organized volleyball since her sophomore year at Swansboro High School in Jacksonville, N.C., said, “I wasn’t really ner vous. It was actually less pres sure.” “Although Pittman hasn’t played for a couple of years, she eliminated the ques tion of whether she was ready for the collegiate level of play. Last, but certainly not least, freshwoman Savoy made her debut a memorable one. She hustled, digged, and passed the ball very well in a match against JBC. Savoy, from Brandywine, Md. said, “Actually, I was ner vous, but I got use to it.” Coach Joyce Spruill spoke highly of her newly added crop of girls. ‘This group has a great attitude and that enhances their learning process.” Team captain Tamara Adams, a 5’8" junior from Sacramento welcomed her new teammates with open arms. “I’m sure they’ll be an asset to the team,” she said. Each year the Bennett vol leyball team is primarily com' posed of freshwomen. “It’s harder to create a bond and team chemistry,” said sophomore, Amanda Pecchioni, from Louis ville, Ky. After the stellar performance of the freshwomenand 3-1 match victories over Livingstone Col lege Sept. 19, it looks as if that chemistry is about to evolve.
