It’s that time agmn. Bennett College held basketball try-outs and unlike volleyball, upperclassmen will make up the majority. Coach Joyce Spruill no longer has to wait until the completion of volleyball season to get the basket ball players in full gear. NCAA regu lations allow collegiate level basket ball to start much earlier. “I am really ready to get into the swing of things,” she said. The try-outs began with intense, full court drills. A lot of passing and dribbling tests were also a major part of the try-outs. With the volleyball team coming off a winning season with an 8-4 record, Spruill said that she’s ready to pursue the best of both sports. “We had a good turn out and key players will be returning.” One of those key players is senior Dain Magodo from Zimbabwe. Magodo lead the team in scoring and assists last season and she is definitely ready to pick up where she left off. “I’m anxious about this season,” she said. “Ijust hope people continue to play and don’t quit on us.” Also returning after leaving for one season is junior Vicki Rose from Cinncinati. Rose spUt the posi tion of guard and forward during the 1992-93 season. She’s on the come back. “I’m definitely back and ready to put my skills to work,’’she said. Bennett has yet to have a winning season in the last few years. This year Bennett has oppurtune time to get in physical, as well as, mental shape. “We’re going to bring Bennett achampionship this year,” Rose added. Assisting Spruill and the Belles will be Jerry Patterson. “These girls worked out fairly well this week,” Patterson said. “But I’m ready to get the ball bouncing.” With the enthusiasm of the coaching staff and players of this year’s basketball team, a winning season defi nitely won’t be hard to grasp.
