March 23, 1995* BENNETT BANNER *3 Sports FSU batters up on the Belles Cinzia Atkinson Banner Sports Editor The Bennett softball team were battered up by visiting Fayetteville State University. The Belles lost 15-2, 9-0 in their season opener double header. The Belles received outstand ing perfomances from freshwomen Carla Ingram, pitcher, Christina Savoy, catcher, and Tanya Aughtry, third base. Unfortunately, the inexperi enced Bennett team was unable to catch up with FSU. Coach Herb Jackson said, “As we get a little more game experi ence, we’ 11 be more competitive. We did pretty good for the first time.” Bennett’s team is composed of 10 freshwomen. The only senior and team leader is Shena Sheffield. ‘We’re a very young team. But they’re all athletically in clined.” The number underclasswomen has its advantages and disad vantages. The team will obvi ously lack experience, butit will also have tfemendous room for improvement. The Belles will take on Randolph-Macon College March 20 at Noco Park. Bennett College has been without a track coach since the departure of Coach Mark Adams. “Track has been washed out since he left”, said Kera Green, a junior. Nursing major, from Philadelphia. The members of the team were not given an explanation as of why they don’t have a track coach. “They don’t care, said Judyann Fletcher, ajunior, Spe cial Education major, from Ber muda. “They told me at the last minute I couldn’t go to national competition and it hurt.” However, the track team thought there was hope after Bennett student Marsha Hawkins attempted to take over the team. She was side tracked due to an internship outof town. “Marsha tried to pave our way back into mainstream but when she left everything faded away”. Green said. Effort to find a coach is still in process even though indoor track is over and outdoor U"ack is now going on. “We’re stilling searching for a coach we are not just going to hire anybody, said Athletic Di rector, Leon McDougle. “We want to make sure the person can work within our set ting our female environment.” BeUe Softball Schedule March 16 Fayetteville State Greensboro 2:00 pm March 22 .
