Critic's Corner 'Outbreak': Wait for cable Tamu Johnson Banner Reporter The new movie Outbreak — about a deadly virus brought from Zaire to a small town in northem California — should have been titled Broken. It was obvious from the beginning of the film that the plot needed fixing. For one, there was no mys tery about how the people in Califomia contracted the vims. It was a mystery, however, how some of those people who were exposed to the virus did not become infected while others did. Also, it hardly seems pos sible that such a deadly virus could be confined to one town. Very confusing. Movie Review Another major problem with the film was the unrealistic lengths that the military underwent to find a cure for the virus, once it spread witliin the community. The film did have some re deeming qualities such as the per formances by Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding Jr. (the cou rageous military officers who jeopardized their own safety to find a cure); Rene Russo, Hoffman’s wife in the film (who due to her own careless behavior was exposed to the vims and became infected); and Morgan Freeman (the stubbom but wise commanding military officer). I don’t recommend this movie. If your still interested, though wait until it starts at the dollar theater. On the other hand... A virus that wanders through the air, waiting to invade your body and powerful enough to destroy you in less than 24 hours. The motaba vims originated in the Motaba Valley River in Zaire. It’s the fictional, but mon strous disease that caused a pandemic in the movie Outbreak. In days, its victims experience svinptoms so horrible that deatli would be tlie only possible relief. When tlie motaba virus spread in a small village in Zaire, the U.S. Army tliought dropping a bomb on the area would destroy it. Instead, the host of the virus, a monkey, hadalready been shipped over to a U.S. animal lab where it was later stolen by an em ployee. Jim bo Scott, the employee, headed for a small Califomia town called Cedar Creek and tried to sell the monkey to a local pet store owner. Little did the men know, they were handling a monkey that was carrying what could be the most deadly virus known to man. Sam Daniels, played by Dustin Hoffman, a military doc tor puts his life on the line when making a desperate attempt to stop the deadly spread in Cedar Creek. With the help of Cuba Gooding Jr. Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman, stopping the vims is a fight to the finish. Outbreak is a dramatic dis play of terror that will leave its viewers squirming on the edge of their seats. Altliough the story is fictional, it is based on an actual event that occured in Washington D.C.
