The film depicts how the Pan thers, founded in Oakland, Cali fornia, promoted the use of guns and violence to protect themselves against what they thought was unjust treatment by the U. S. gov ernment in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film also shows how gov ernment officials used various tactics — including infesting the black conununity with drugs — to stop the growing influence of the Panthers. Movie Review Panther presents very powerful message. Unfortunately former Panther leaders Eldridge Cleaver andBobby Seals don’tagree with the film’s producer Mario Van Peebles’ interpretation of their organization and its activities. According to an interview pub lished in the News & Record, Cleaver and Seals said that the movie focused too much on the violent aspects of the group and failed to show the positive activi ties such as providing meals for school children. The Panthers were militant, but they did want what was best for black commu nities. Despite this conffoversy other CTiticisms Panther is indeed an excellent movie. I encourage everyone to see it and do some research about the Black Pan thers. The film’s all-star cast includes Kadeem Hardison, Courtney Vance, Marcus Chong, Rapper Nefertiti, Jo Don Baker, Tyrin Turner James Russo, and M. Walsh Emmet. Sherry Jones Guest Reviewer A lot can happen in one day, especially on the weekend. The outrageously funny new comedy, Friday brings to die screen the story of a relaxing day turned chaotic, with a moral lesson learned. Craig, played by Ice Cube, is the serious, 22 year-old who likes to do two things: watch the pretty girl across tlie street and chill with his friend Smokey. He has just lost his job and has notliing better to do. Besides, he has no money. Smokey, on die other hand, is a wisecracking hustler, played by Chris Tucker, who makes his money by selling weed for the neighborhood drug dealer. His only problem is he’s smoking tlie profits. What starts out as a relaxing day of sitting on the porch, smok ing weed and dodging the neigh borhood bully, turns into an evening of chaos when the dealer finds out what Smokey is doing. There is one major problem. Smokey gets Craig involved in the situation. The result is a threat to their lives and one Fri day they'll never forget. Movie Review In a desperate attempt to protect himself and Smokey, Craig grabs his gun. But before he can do anything stupid, his father teaches him an important lesson about a less violent and life sav ing form of self defense. The moral lesson in Friday teaches us that there are better ways to handle situations such as Craig and Smokey’s. But the fact remains diat if Smokey hadn’t been involved in an ille gal act, maybe diere wouldn’t have been any trouble. Ice Cube said in an interview on BET’s Screen Scene that he wanted to show a lighter side to the hood. Based on its comedy, Fridav is a lighter side indeed. But where diere is an illegal act, there is trouble.
