Student awarded
unique scholarship
PUBLIC RELATIONS - - A non-
traditional student has been awarded a
$1,000 scholarship by the Business and
Professional Women’s Foundation.
Brenda Drayton, a 52-year-old senior,
majoring in social work, was given the
AARP Women’s Initiative 10th Anniver
sary Scholarship.
A native of Lake Alfred, Fla, Drayton
attended Polk Community College in Win
ter Haven, Roridabefore coming to Bennett
College. This was the only time this
particular scholarship will be awarded.
Drayton was chosen from a large pool
of highly qualified applicants.
There were 405 applicants and only 47
were awarded a scholarship. To qualify,
applicants had to be over 25 years old, have
some volunteer experience and excellent
academic records.
In addition, applicants also had to write
an essay describing their career goals.
Drayton plans to work in the public schools.
Drayton is the mother of four children,
including 1995 Bennett graduate Kelly
Drayton.

It’s on fire.
You can smell the smoke from the cafe.

The Mass Conmiunications, Speech and
Tlieatre Department is on fire and ready to
bum through all realms of communica
tions.
The fire .started when 1994 Bennett
graduate and former Miss Mass Commu
nications , Nicole Issac, asked that her
employer Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals
donate more than $70,000 worth of equip
ment to her alma mater.
Isaac is a media production specialist
employed with the pharmaceutical com
pany, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.
The equipment was picked up at the
company’s headquarters in Raritan, N. J.
by Bruce Clark, director of telecommuni
cations, Sept. 15.
The “new” equipment will be used in

tional and productional purposes, accord
ing to Jo Diuiiels, a tcciiniciaii in the de-
paruneni.
“This will allow for expanded capabilities
to our existing studio facility,’ Clark said.
All “old” — current— equipment will
be pulled out, racked ;uid made transport
able for field prcxluction, portable shoots,
mid remote pnxluction.

“was more than happy to donate” the equip
ment.
“It was either Bennett or another school

A total of 201 new fresh women- the last
class of students for the decade, the
century and the millennium - were offi
cially welcomed into the Bennett family for
the College’s 122nd academic session.
Convocatum Est in the annual fall con
vocation which inducts new students into
the college. This year, as in the past, the
program was held in the Annie Memer
Pfeiffer ('hapel, Aug. 24.
During her address, President Scott
focuscd on the challenges facing Alri-
can-American women including the
OOP’S “The Contract With America.”
Scott said that 70,000 college students
will be effected by the cuts in financial
aid this year alone.
