Critic's Comer Wu-Tang Clan has done it again Keita N. White Banner Reporter If you like rap music the Wu-Tang Clan has got something for you. Raekwon the Chef, one of the founding members of the group is making sure the Wu- Tang's name stands out on the map of the hip-hop world with his recendy released debut album “OnlyBuilt4 Cuban Linx.” The Fall of 1993 the Wu-Tang Clan crept up on the scene with their first single, “Protect Ya Neck.” This single had a few heads nodding, but no one imagined that this 11 -man team would explode on the hip-hop scene with enough ferocity to easily measure 2.4 on tlie Rictor scale. It’s now 1995 and the Wu- Tang Clan is far from finished blowing up the Billboard Charts. Their newest solo album to bomb radio waves, “Only Built4 Cuban Linx,” comes from one of Wu- Tang’sbestkeptsecrets. Youmay remember Raekwon the Chef from Wu-Tang’s debut album where his unique style of bouncing lyr ics off of hard core uacks in the USIC [nieview song “C.R.E.A.M.” gained him an enormous amount of respect in the h ip-hop community and earned the Wu-Tang its second gold single. “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx,” tlie offspring of Raekwon’s hip- hop “ hypeness” and super pro ducer the Rza’s genius track production, is already shipping gold after being released only four and a half short weeks ago. Raekwon along with Ghost Face Killer (who is featured in 13 out of the 18 tracks) turns his heart felt hooks into an autobiographi cal account of Urban sueet life. This concept of street report- mg is constantly manifested in cuts such as “Knuckleheadz,” where heart wrenching lyrics about making it out of the ghetto flow over a heavy base line with an eerie flow of pianos weaving in and out and “Glaciers of Ice” where a story aboutagun heist is told over a constant barrage of gun fire and saeaming, attack ing you from every angle. Not every song on the album jumps out at you; however, “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” is definitely worth picking up at your favorite record store. The Wu-Tang Clan has done it again.
