3 • BENNETT BANNER • FEBRUARY 9, 1996 SPORTS Hoopers suffer back-to-back losses Barber-Scotia squeaks past Belles by 3 Tahia McVav Banner Sports Editor In what can be referred to as a painful squeeker the Belle hoopers suffered a 59-62 defeat at home againstBarber-ScotiaCollege Jan. 30. The Belles could have won if they had played as hard as they did against Winston-Salem State," said Head Coach Joyce Spruill. “I was hurt by that game,” Spruill said. "I think we took them [Barber- Scotia] for granted. We weren’t the same team that played against Winston-Salem State," Spruill added. By the half, Bennett was only down by one point, with a score of 21-22 due to the efforts of guard Dain Magodo and forward An drea JenerretL Both added six points and recovered four re bounds. "If we had played the begin ning like the end it wouldn’t have been a contest,” Spruill said. Near tLe end of the second half, a miracle happened. Five- four guard, Dain Magodo, a se nior from Zimbabwe attempted to put the Belles back in the game by adding two points dur ing the last 15 seconds of the game to put the score at 59-60, with Barber-Scotia holding on to a 1-point lead. Magodo’s efforts were in vain because the Belle hoopers couldn’t pull it out. By the fourth quarter, the game took a turn for the worse when the Belle defense grew weak, andBarber-Scotia began to pump in three pointers. Barber-Scotia’s Head Coach Deonia Simmons only has six players and Bennett has 13 which put his team under a lot of pressure. He said he felt like he pulled it off considering he didn’t have any body else to play when those six players got tired. “Through God all things are possible, with six players we did what wehad to do and pulled through,” Simmons said. Leading scorers include Magodo, who finished with 30 points and five rebounds and Sonya Washington of Barber Scotia had 21 points and six rebounds. The Belles now have a 3-8 record. During the first half the Belles came out in full force and were only down by two points by the end of the half with a score of 33-31. Conmienting on their strong showing. Head Coach Joyce Spruill said that they played like a “real team.” During the second half of the game the Belles came out tired and struggled to hold the lead. “The Winston-Salem State game was a hard game but we should have won it,” Spruill said. Coach Debra Clark said she thought Bennett played well and Vimbayi Muhomah a freshwoman from Bennett had a lot of quickness. “Bennett made us struggle,” Clark said. We had to go from man to man defense to zone.” Anna Mhaka a freshwoman from Zimbabwe led the Belles with 25 points, 22 points from Vimbayi Muhomah, also from Zimbabwe. Muhomah said she didn’t feel satisfied with the game and felt she did something wrong. “When we lose a game I al ways feel there is something wrong I did as a player and I’m never satisfied with how I play,” Muhomah said.
