OPINION
Student Opinion Poll:
The National Miss UNCF competition is an
elite competition in which money is raised to
Jurther help HBCUs. The criteria for the
selection process has been ehaUenged, Some feel
the selection process should be changed from d
fundraising only competition to a competition
which would allow Judges to interact with the
contestants directly.

Should the selection of Miss UNCF be based on fund raising or talent?

“I would prefer that it is based
on the amount of money raised.
That’s what UNCF is all
about.”

“I think the winner should be
based on intellect It should be
based 50 percent on beauty
(articulate, intelligence) and 50
percent cm the money raised. It
shouldn’t be all one sided.”

“I think it should be based on the
amount of money raised. Beauty
and talent may be all that she has
to show for herself. I don’t feel
that would get her far in life.”

“It’s all about money regard
less. Money will get you
anywhere. It should be based
on money.”

“I would prefer it was for the
money only. Beauty shouldn’t be
the determining factor and we
should get away from that.”
Miss UNCF competition
should be altered
We have all heard the
expression “Pretty is as pretty
does,” but what if a winner is
chosen based solely on the
amount of money her school
raises?
This is the
criteria that the
United Negro
College Fund
has been
employing when it chooses
the new Miss National
UNCF. It has been prqwsed,
however, that this fund
raising competition be
changed to beauty pageant-
type competition.
I somewhat agree with
that proposal. The selection
process of the Miss UNCF
should take into consideration
more than the amount of
money raised by the student's
institution.
Indeed money is very
necessary for the survival of

the UNCF organization, but
what if the young woman
chosen is not the "appropri
ate" type and not only
misrepresents
the UNCF but
also her
college or
university?
As a former
Miss Black North Carolina
USA, I have been made
aware of what is considered
to be aRjropriate - for both
^pearance and behavior.
Therefore I was shocked at
what I witnessed while
attending the recent UNCF
coronation in Washington,
D.C..
One of the contestants.
Miss Livingstone College
UNCF, was standing at an
exhibit hall in the hotel
wearing her sash and a pair
of bedroom slippers. I felt
embarrassed for her and her
school, as onlookers pointed and
laughed in disbelief.
What if this young lady had
w(Hi because her school raised
the most money per capita?
I am sure that she is intelli
gent, but her actions indicated to
me that she lacked public
etiquette at that time and place.
Luckily, for both Bennett and
the UNCF that Dara Wilson, a
young lady who is poised,
intelligent, and articulate was
chosen to reign as the new Miss
UNCF.
The National Miss UNCF
competition should require all of
the contestants to demonstrate
intelligence, articulation skills
and personality. Then the judges
can based their selection on
what they see and hear in
addition to how much money an
instititi(H) has raised. If or when
this happens, a Bennett Bell will
[X'obably win the title again and
again...
