2 • BENNETT BANNER • MARCH 22, 1996 OPINION Student Opinion Poll: After three days of grueling mid-term exams, students got a vacation away from school during spring break, March 2-10. BtWtSpeak Photos bv Tahja McVay Banner Sports Editor What did you do for Spring Breai? LORI HAWKINS CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: BUS. ADMIN HOME STATE: WASH., D.C. I visited my famOy in D.C., came back here, sent resumes for jobs, and rested for the last half of the break. I m SHONIKA RIDLEY CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: PSYCHOLOGY HOME STATE: GEORGLV For four days I visited family in Virginia and worked a few days to make extra money and relaxed. The latter part of the break I went out of town and got a speeding ticket. Whose acceptance speech do you want to hear? Imagine this: The month is November. Today is Wednes day, the day after Election Day. And the GOP candidate, 71-year-old Bob Dole, is on televi sion thanking his supporters for electing him as President of the United States. (President Dole, you say. No way. Even though the polls are indicating that Clinton is leading by a slight margin, nine months is far away.) With Dole at the helm, what will happen to government entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid, Welfare, and Federal Student Aid? What about the federal budget? What will h^pen to our grandparents — the elderly? What will happen to the low-income or the poor? Republicans want to cut spending for the poor. Ironically, those affected most by the GOP cuts would probably be low-income workers — the people struggling hardest to avoid poverty. There will be caps on Medicaid spending, school lunches and food stamps. Who will be the hardest hit? The “wealthier” families whose income is between $15,000 and $25,000. Did I miss SOTiething? Can a single mother effectively raise her children on $15,000 a year? Hardly. Everyone agrees that education is the key to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. 1 do not necessarily mean a formal education but rather an education that helps a person to became aware of what is going on around him or her. An education that demonstrates how important it is to vote. If the Republicans succeed in their bid for the jresidency, you can be sure that they will try to cut student aid even more. Pell grants and student loans might be cut to eliminated “wasteful government spending.” When Election Day arrives in November exercise your right to vote, unless it does not make a difference to you whose acceptance speech you will be hearing.
