4 • BENNETT BANNER - APRIL 12, 1996 Batters gear up for new season SPORTS For your tummy—ab-solute perfection Tahja McVav Banner Sports Editor The Bennett “batters” are back. The softball season started March 26 with an opener against Meredith College. Seventeen players are return ing and 11 new players wiU head up the season. Head Coach Herb Jackson wants the team to be competitive because his basic goal is to win and make Bennett look good. However, Jackson said that last year’s team had a lot more talent but this year’s team has more drive, competitive spirit and they want to win. But the inclement weather has made it impossible for this team to play up to their full potential. “Our basic goals are limited due to the practice facility and the inclement weather,” Jackson said. “There are things that we can’t do inside that have to be done outside and that affects our game,” A typical practice day for the team starts at 4 p jn. with running, jumping, and stretching. They prac tice infield and outfield techniques and end the practice with wind sprints. Takiyah Starks, a sophomore biology major from Chicago, said that the gym doesn’t give them enough room and some people who have never played softball don’t always know how to react to certain situations unless they have played on a real field. “From experience I try to help people and the people who can’t play as well they have improved,” Starks said. The team now has a 0-6 record and they play there games in the Levette field at Noco Park on Lee Street. (NAPS)—If you do what you can for your abdominals, they will do some pretty nice things for you. Today’s fit-conscious Americans have their eyes on the mid-section, and will stop at nothing to get perfectly-toned “washboard” abs. Good abs are not only desired for appearance, but are a central part of the body that provides strength and stability and are essential for good posture. It’s not surprising then that in a recent survey, 60 percent of respondents selected the abdominals as the area they would like to tone the most. The rest of the body didn’t come close, with 14 percent of the vote going to the legs, and the arms and buttocks receiving 9.5 and eight percent respectively. Survey participants also rated the abs of some male and female celebrities. Who’s got the best abdominal tone? Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner- Kersee received 44 percent of the vote, more than twice that of newly-toned pop diva Janet Jackson. A spokesman for NordicTrack, which commis sioned the survey in conjunction with the introduc tion of its new AbWorks abdominal exercise ma chine, said that for men the abdominal area can be a resting place for fat. Women, on die other hand, seemed to worry most about their lower abs— especially after child-bearing. Jordan—The man behind the myth (NAPS)—As the NBA season moves towards the playoffs, the Chicago Bulls not only have the best record in the league, they are being talked about as the best bas ketball team ever. Leading the Bulls on this drive toward history is Michael Jordan, who has reached new , heights of achievement since his re turn from re tirement and baseball. The story of what has gone on be hind the scenes with Jordan is as dramatic as anything that has taken place on the court, and of fers the an swers to what has made Jordan elevate himself and his team in a manner unprec edented in the annals of basket ball. In the newly published RE BOUND: The Odyssey of Michael Jordan (Viking, $22.95), bestsell ing author Bob Greene takes an intimate look at a man who rarely lets anyone know what he’s really thinking. The book takes the reader from minor league dugouts to packed NBA arenas and is the story of a man who seemingly had every thing the world could offer, and then, in pain, left it behind in an effort to rediscover who he once was and who he wanted to be. Critics re port Rebound is moving and evocative, a sports book unlike any other, capturing the man behind the myth and the life behind the legend. ■ .
