SPRING SCHEDULE

change with prior notice.
For variety try a mixed tape
Have you ever been in a car for
at least three hours with three
people who couldn’t decide on
what music to listen to? I have
and trust me it’s not fun. Fortu
nately, I have a solutions for all of
your musical dilemmas. MIX
TAPES.
Mix tapes are the newest craze
in music. They are usually be
tween 60 and 90 minutes long and
are jam-packed with all the hot
test new songs and remixes. Mix
tapes are made by professional
DJ’s with special connections in
the music industry that allows
them to release their tapes with
songs that won’t be heard on the
radio until months later.
There are mix tapes for just
about every type of music. Most
mix tapes are geared towards rap
music. There are however, slow
jams, R&B, classic soul, reggae
\usic Review
and house music mix tapes.
The best way to guarantee satis
faction when buying a mixed tape
is to stick to a DJ that you know.
Most of the time different DJ’s
stick to a particular type of music.
For instance, if you like reggae
music you may want to look for
tapes made by “DJ Craig G.” The
top DJ’s in rap music are “Clue”
and “S&S.”
Most of the time these tapes are
sold on the streets by vendors with
radios.
Always ask the vendor to see
thelistofwhat’sonthetape. Then,
ask the vendor to play the t^,
this way you can make sure that
you have a clear copy.
RecOTd labels are starting to
sign DJ’s, making it easier for you
to get mixed tapes and now mixed-
tape CX).’s.
This is bringing an increasingly
large audience to DJ’s who have
been considered underground for
years. It’s also helping to retire
some of the more popular DJ’s,
like “Kid Capri” and “Funk Mas
ter Flex,” who have gone more
mainstream and considered out of
touch with the underground.
Unique recording blends poetry, acoustic music
The often overlooked hero
ism of slave women, their resil
ience, their individual spirit, their
incredible capacity to move for
ward in the face of painful
obstacles,is the focus of The Color
of Dusk, released in February on
the independent Clean Cuts la
bel. Not only is Color a signifi
cant cultural event in the history
of persons of African descent, it
is also a beautifully recorded ex
amination of a dark chapter in the
history of all people.
The album’s first 10 ttacks are
set to poems from The Women of
Plums: Poems In The Voices of
Slave Women, the critically ac
claimed book by Washington,
D.C.- based poet Delores
Kendrick. Her award-winning po
ems have been masterfully set to
music by guitarist Wall Matthews,
with passionate vocal arrange
ments and narrations by singer-
actress Aleta Greene and percus
sion by Abdoul Doumbia, the in
ternationally reowned master
drummer from Mali.
