She gave Critic's Corner Replace 'Substitute' with another movie Tamu Johnson Banner Movie Reviewer The Substitute,” a film starring Tom Berenger as an ex-mercenary turned substitute teacher is a hor rible film. Berenger, plays “Mr. Smith” a vigilante teacher that literally beats American history into his students in an inner city public high school in Florida. He’s the “Conan” of the Miami public school system. Smith has been ostracized by the U.S. government and now he is teaching minority students who have been ostracized by society. and because of Smith’s efforts some of the students develop an ovie meview interest in their education. The plot gets somewhat interest ing during his tenure at the school. Smith notices the principal, played by Bemie Hall, wearing an expen sive watch. This observation leads Smith to become suspicious, so he sets up a surveillance and catches the principal filtering drugs through the school with the help of a street gang whose leader is in Smith’s history class. The unrealistic aspect of the film is the depiction of a war against the drug dealers and Smith after the students have been dis missed. If you're interested in seeing an unrealistic way of fighting drugs in schools this is the movie for you but if you like action films with plots try anothermovie. “The Sub stitute” is now playing at the Ja nus Theaters. Blues' not good for summer reading Donna Barden Banner Movie Reviewer Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine, a novel by Bebe Moore Campbell, was just that; it gave me nothing but the blues. After the first page I knew that it wasn’t the type of book I was interested in. The only thing that kept me truly interested was that a murder occured and the suspense of fmding the killer kept me there. The novel is fiction and set in the 1950’sin rural Mississippi. As in many stories during the 50’s, a black boy spoke “an innocent French phrase” to a white woman and after that incident, it becomes a black and white issue, with ani mosity from both races towards each other. It is a good history story, if you're reading it to learn about history and not for true enjoy ment. I would recommend it for that reason only. Although I enjoy reading books by Ms. Campbell, this one I found did not keep my attention. I suggest reading the novel if your interested in the civil rights move ment. the all-male college a gift of SI million. 22, 1942 Marguerite Ross Barnett was born in Charlottesville, Va. She became the first black and the first woman chief administraator of the flag ship of the four- campus Houston system, when she was appointed president of the University of Houston in 1990. 24, 1966 Leotyne Price opens Metropolitian Opera season. 25,1971 Jo Etha Collier a black girl, was shot dead in Drew, Miss, at the age of 18. She was killed in a drive by shooting less than an hour after her graduation from the newly desegregated Drew High School where she had been desig nated, “The student with the most school spirit.” Three white men were arrested and charged with her murder on May 26, 1971. 29, 1965 Vivian Malone is first black to graduate from the Univer sity of Alabama.
