No reason to (joubt, Jay-Z is the bomb RITIC'S □RNER «e«tle4»« £ By Keita White Banner CO-Editor and Reviewer The summer of 1996 has seen so many new albums that the people in the lo cal record store where 1 live in Brooklyn now know my name. I got on their nerves because there was one CD in particular that hadme in the record storeat - least four times a week—checking for a release date. The CD, entitled "Reasonable Doubt," by Brook lyn r^per Jay-Z. I heard the single that Jay-Z released back in 1995 called "In My Lifetime," and I was immedi ately hooked. No other rapper in the history of rap music had ever captured my attentic« the way that Jay-Z did. He flipps and bounces his sentences off of tracks that could make even the best producers cry. But his single was just that - a single. Needless to say, he left me wanting more. To my shock,! was told that he was no longer signed to that label, so a complete album was out of the question. Fortu nately Jay-Z didn't give up his dream of becoming a rapper. He started his own record label called Rockafella Records. "Reasonable Doubt" is more than an album for Jay-Z. It's a neon billboard placed high in the center of every ghetto in America that says I turned my negative toa positive, and you can too! Jay-Z aJc.a. Sean Carter was one of the most notorious drag dealers to hit America’s streets. He was so large that had l«x)ken o£f into franchises in different states across America. He could have stayed in the drag game ,but took his street-life knowledge and the capital earnedfromhis lifeof crime and opened his own record label. "Reasonable Doubt" has all of the makings of a hit record. The production, which was done by some of the top {woducers in the industry, could alone blow the top off of any hip-hop head. In "Regrets" one of my favorite songs be raps to bis mother telling her that he knows how she feels abouthis illegal occupation, buthe can’t stop because the money is so addictive. In the second verse he raps to a friend who has died selling drugs telling him how well he's (Jay-Z) doing and thanking him for the advice that that helped keep him alive and out of jail. If you like rap music and you don't have this CD you are defi nitely missing something.
