By Kenya Samuels, Banner Reviewer In the wake of the Rodney King verdict and the Los Angeles riots, private eye Ivan Monk is searching for truth in a racially divided city. Monk wants to find the killer of a Korean grocer and dispel the myth that the murder was racially biased. "Violent Spring," (Berkeley, 257pages, $5.50) is the soon- to-be HBO mystery by African-American novelist Gary Phillips that introduces Alirican-American private investigator, Ivan Monk. Phillips' mystery places the reader in actual settings to his ficdonal characters. Monk, a former merchant marine - turned bounty Hunter - turned PI is our hero. Monk along with his girlfriend, a Japanese- American, tackles such problems StaUem as racial division and interracial relations all the while going above and beyond the call the duty to solve this case. When the race-divided neighborhood groups take interest in the very publicized murder of the Korean grocer, PI Monk is called on the case. It is up to him to let the story hungry media know that they will not have a repeat of last year. His case is not to find the kiUer, but to create a sense of racial harmony between the African-Americans, Koreans, Whites, and Latinos. Monk, although African- American, is the mediator of the groups as he travels in and around LA, risking his own life while locating die murderer of the Korean grocer. PhilUps'mystery settings are reaUstic. He writes his characters with an edge that has strong action and a plot that can be easily followed. His words keep the reader riveted to each page as Monk dodges the cops, gangs, and neighborhood leaders trying to solve the case before LA suffers another "Violent Spring."
