Kinfolks' intertwines love, hope, incest RITIC'S ORNER X By Kenya Samuels Banner Features Editor Sisters, imagine your perfect mate. Is he tall, dark, and hand some? Does it matter whether he is educated or is a BMW (black man working) the answer to all your dreams? Now imagine that you have met your perfect mate and your interests coincide right down to the strawberry allergy you both share, and the birthmark behind your left ears. Spooky or just a strange coin cidence? Now imagine that the dreams you have of marrying your per fect mate turn into nightmares when you find out that your per fect mate is in fact your older brother. Yes Sisters, imagine loving Omar Epps and then finding out that he is your brother. In Kinfolks (276 pp, $23, XetUem Ballantine Books) by Kristin Hunter Lattany, that is exactly the case. Aisha and Saint are desperately in love and planning to marry within the next six months when their worlds are shattered by the realization that they are siblings. It is Saint’s mother Patrice, and Aisha’s mother Cherry, lifelong friends, who not only discover that their children are related, but that the father of these children has fathered many more. Cherry and Patrice realize that the kinfolk created by Aisha and Saint’s father is a bond that de serves not to be broken. Thus, be gins their quest for the lost chil dren of Eugene D. Green, Aisha and Saint’s father. Kinfolks is a story the hope of Cherry and Patrice to find their children’s siblings so that there will always have the kinfolk that was created by their father. Kinfolks is also a story about loves lost and found, and the deep est kind of love: parent-child. This tale forces you think about how important your parents really are to you. It also makes you wary about the one you love; you never know if Omar Epps is really your brother.
