Bittersweet story explores women’s cravings RITIC’S ! ORNER I ^ J (NAPS) Americans often confuse food with love. Evidence of this can be found in Jillian Medoff s brutally frank and wickedly funny first novel about body image and self esteem. "In Hunger Point" (HarperColUns, $24), Medoff explores the tortured and sometimes fatal relationship that women can have with food and how women use food to feed feelings of emptiness. “ Eating disorders are not about food,” Medoff said. The novel’s two main charac ters, funny, irreverent and self destructive Frannie and her seemingly perfect but anorexic sister, Shelly, have grown up obsessed with food and body image. In this family, “The word fat assumed a meaning deadly as cancer.” Their family is ultimately tom apart by this obsession when SheUy’s anorexia sends her to to a hospital and ultimately causes her to kill herself. “ Food is easy to abuse, because you have to eat (unlike alcohol which you can give up com pletely), it is very desirable ancl tastes good. When you have no other control over your life, you can control how much you ingest,” Medoff said. Medoff said she knows these control issues intimately. Her preoccupation with weight developed into anorexia at 12 and bulimia from 14 on. It also led her into self-destructive relationships with unsuitable men (whom the book dubs “rat- boys”) that did litde for her self esteem. “ My foundation was shaky to begin with and as I got older, I got more confused until I was whirling in an emotional vortex that was the result of this incredible void. I developed a coping mechanism-albeit a very destructive one-to deal with it. Writing the novel proved to be cathartic. My eating disorder was a way for me to function in the world,” Medoff said. “My relationship with Hunger Point, which has spanned four years, has been my greatest love affair.” The Critic's Corner accepts reviews, previews and criticisms of music, books, poetry, plays and movies that are 150 words or less.
