'Good Hair' -- a Cinderella tale of stereotypes, blacl love RITIC'S ORNER ttaUwA X By Kenya A. Samuels Banner Features Editor Imagine living among the world of the black bourgeoisie when the world you came from consisted of drug-dealers, homeless neighbors, and struggles from paycheck to paycheck. Now imagine that the black bourgeoisie world doesn’t really want you; they only tolerate you because you are dating one of their most eligible bachelors. Sounds like a modem day Cinderella story? In "Good Hair," by Benilde Little ($22.00,235 pp. Simon & Schuster) that is exactly what our Cindeiella-alias Alice Andrews has to deal with. She is dating Jack Russworm, h SB0*A SttaUm a third-generation. Harvard-bred doctor from the upper-crust of Boston. Alice is from the riot tom streets of Newark, New Jersey, hardly a place where anyone in Jack’s family wants to be associated with. Never mind, they don’t completely approve of Alice. The only approval she has received from Jack’s family is that she is a graduate of the prestigious Mount Holyoke. Other than that, Alice’s hair isn’t “good enough” nor is her skin “light enough” which equals to not “good enough” for the uppercmst of Boston. "Good Hair "is not only a story about the stereotypes within the black race, but it is also a developing love story about two black people who have numerous obstacles to overcome so that they can love each other without any problems. "Good Hair" - a Cinderella tale - leaves the reader crying tears of joy.
