2 • BENNETT BANNER •DECEMBER 12, 1997 • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • Paquita Herring It's now our turn to help the Thompson babies If you haven’t heard anything about Bobbi McCaughey, the woman that gave birth to seven babies then you’ve been living in a cave. If you haven’t heard anything about Jacqueline Thompson the woman that gave birth to six babies then that’s understandable. Most of the media appears to have chosen to “hype ” the birth of the babies in Iowa and to overlook the first Black woman to have six babies in the United States. The effects of the fertility pills kicked in and the McCaugheys got a little more than they bargained for. Then again, maybe not because along with the babies they got a van, huge amounts of baby supplies, college tuition, and even a house. The Thompsons, on the other hand, wrote companies and asked for things and reportedly received little or close to nothing. Some may say the Thompsons may be experiencing a form of racism. Actually it lies a Uttle deeper than just racism. The community in Iowa pulled together to make sure that the McCaugheys had everything that they needed. The time is now for the African-American community to do the same. And what better time than Christmas, the season of giving. The opinion expressed in this column is that of the author and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Bennett Banner staff. Student Opinion Poll Why do you thinl the Thompson quintuplets did not receive as much media coverage as the McCaughey septupiets? Photos by Camisha Gentry, Banner Photographer A EBONY MASSENBERG CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: BIOLOGY HOME STATE: NEW YORK The Thompson [mother] did not receive top media coverage because she did not have the first sextuplets, and in the media, the first breaking story is the only story. KEISHA STREATER CLASS: FRESHWOMAN MAJOR: SPECIAL ED. HOME STATE: NEW JERSEY TTie Thompsons did not get a lot of media coverage because they are black. The media usually cover stories that are negative toward the black community and this one was positive. BRANDI HUDSON CLASS: FRESHWOMAN MAJOR: ELEM. ED. HOME STATE: OHIO / H'as glad to know that black sextuplets were bom in the United States. But in a recent interview the Thompsons were glad that they did not receive all of the media coverage that the McCaughey septupiets received. Jm REBEKAH MELTON CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: BIOLOGY HOME STATE: VIRGINIA The media did not respond to the Thompsons because they were not the first people (besides the fact that they were the first black family with multiple natural births) to have sextuplets. MELISSA LAWSON CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: ENGLISH HOME STATE: MARYLAND The Thompson sextuplets did not receive as much attention as the McCaugheys because they are AfricanAmerican. We almost always get the short end of the stick. SHELONDA SMITH CLASS: SENIOR MAJOR: BIOLOGY HOME STATE: WASH D.C. The reason the Thompsons didn't receive much attention from the media was because of their race. I also believe this was very unfair because the McCaugheys used fertility pills and the Thompson births were natural.
