What better place is there to celebrate the history of women than at one of the only two black women’s institutions for higher learning in the country. It is necessary to take the time to celebrate our gender in the month of March the same way we celebrate Black History in February. Women have been denied the opportunity to hold positions in major offices, and upper level business positions. The women that defied the odds and achieved success are considered to be heroes because they paved the way for other women. Women such as Barbara Jordan paved the way for other women when she became the first black Texan elected to the Senate since 1883. In some branches of Christianity women have been denied the right to hold religious positions. For that, we celebrate Pauli Murray, the first woman Episcopal priest who was denied entry to UNC Chapel- Hill because she was black though her ancestors owned the majority of the land that the school was built on. Centuries ago the charm of the world would have been lost without women and today we are just beginning to recognize the positive affect that women have had on our society. It’s been brought to light, women can do anything, and for that we celebrate Women’s History Month.
