O O .O "I 3 • BENNETT BANNER - APRIL 24, 1998 • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • Dear Sisters, As the year draws quickly to a close, I feel that it is most appropriate to reflect upon the happenings of the 97-98 school year. The SGA Executive Board and I have worked very hard to make sure that Bennett's name would be held in high esteem and to make sure your rights are being protected. Next year I have the opportu nity to serve you once more as SGA president It is my hope that I will see an increased student participation and morale as the SGA works hard to make sure that your needs are met. We can only do that with your help. The more you participate in activities, the more activities we can have. Nubian Nuance Week was an example of just how exciting the Bennett College campus can be but, that takes lots of hard work. When you reflect on this year, remember its successes including "The Million Women March," "The March for Social Justice," a successful Nubian Nuance, and the list goes on. To the graduating seniors, my luck to you in the your future endeavors. To the rising seniors: Let's' finish our remaining time here at Bennett with a bang. To all returning BeDes: Be motivated. Let's look forward to an exciting year. Tennille Francis, SGA President 1 Washington to (NAPS)—^Imagine working and not getting paid for your efforts. That’s the fate faced by songwriters and music publishers if a new bill is passed in Congress. If this new bill, H.R. 789, is passed, restaurants, bars, taverns and other establishments will have the right to use music for free. According to Marilyn Bergman, writer of such standards as “The Way We Were” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” and chair of the songwriters organization known as ASCAP, “Performing rights is the largest single source of income for songwriters and music publishers, andenables them to feed their families, pay their bills, and run their businesses.” This bill follows on the heels of several state bills which have al ready been introduced, that will make it impossible to enforce the federal laws against the illegal use of music. These same establish ments want to use music for free. Groups of songwriters, compos ers and music publishers have al ready met with many members of Congress to explain the point of view. More needs to be done to stop H.R. 789. Anyone may con tact Congress on this or any other issue by calling your Congressj)erson’s or Senator’s lo cal office. You may also call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224- 3121 to getyourCongressperson’s number in Washington, D.C. Oops! Here It is!
