Skin cancer: the sumnner sun risk
By Adwoa Aikins
Banner Reporter
As the school year 97-98 comes
to an end scsne of us are going to
be exposed to a lot of sun light this
summer.
ScMne people may be concerned
about the sun's ultraviolet radia
tion filtering through the ozone
layer. These are the rays that are
thought to cause skin cancer. Skin
cancer is a malignant condition
that begins with the excessive,
uncontrolled growth of abncwmal
cells in one of the layers of skin,
according to the Skin Cancer Foun
dation.
People should stay out of the
sun during peak hours due to it
being the most vulnerable times to
be exposed to the strongest rays of
sun.
Two factors that contribute to
being at risk are the accumulated
time a perscMi spends in the sun,
and the number of sunburn’s.
"I use SF sunscreen to protect
myself from sunburn because of
my complexion I get burned eas
ily," said Ayiana Drake, a fresh
woman biology major from Illi
nois.

moles or have a family history of
skin cancer.
Some black people think that
because their skin is pigmented
they are not susceptible to sunburn
or skin cancer.

Students
for the next three months.
There are no storage facUities on
campus, and students may not
leave their personal belongings in
their rooms because most of dorms
will be occupied during the sum
mer months.
‘Two of the biggest concerns
about students storing their things
here [on campus] are having aplace
to keep student’s materials dry and
safe,” saidMaryann Scarlette, aca
demic achievement and retention
dean.
“It would be ideal if the students
could stcwe their things in the resi
dence halls, but when they [the
dorm roooms] are not being occu
pied by Bennett students, they are
occupied by high school students
during the summer.”
There are several storage facili
ties located throughout the Triad
and in Greensboro. Some of those
facilities are close to campus. The
size of the storage areas and the
prices vary. Storage sizes range
from as small as 5x6 to 10x10, and
prices range from $19 to $60 per
month. Because space is often
limited, the majority of the places
require advanced reservations.
