Two great Christmas picks: Ice Cube or Dru Hill CDs reviews & previews BY NAIMA Q. BARBOUR News Editor Can you believe in a few months "Straight Outta Compton " turns 10? It has been ahnost 10 years since the gang colors, and how low can you go bass have been re placed by Puff Daddy's glitz and glamour rap style and No Limit's "Bout It." It has also been ten years since 0'SheaJackson,better known as Ice Cube, has been involved in the rap game. Ice Cube is back with "War & Peace "-Volume 1 (The War Disc) (Lench MoblPriority Records). "War" is not one of Ice Cube's best projects since his departure from NWA but it will keep you bounc ing to the tight beats. This is his first solo album in five years. He has been involved with launching Mack 10, Westside Connection and Mr. ShortKhop's career. "The War disc is talking about what I think is the war of life and war of living," Ice Cube said. "I push rhymes like weight," exclaims Ice Cube on his first single, "Pushin' Weight," featur ing Mr. Short Khop. Itreached No. 2 on the Billboard Charts. Also joining him on "War" are Mack 10 and Master P. "Ghetto Vet" is a vivid account ofagangbangerparalyzedby "Two youngsters.../One on the pedals. Music Review the other on the handlebars." In addition to being a rap artist, earlier this year Ice Cube co-pro duced, wrote, and directed "The Player's Club." His single, "We Be Clubbin," off the soundtrack, had everyone bouncing' this summer. Nineteen hundred and ninetv-eight has been a great year for Ice Cube. Cube said Peace will be unlike anything he's ever done before. Volume 2 (The Peace Disc) will be released in early 1999. If you are a Rhythm & Blues lover, check out the latest by Dm Hill. Sisqo, Nokio, Woody and Jazz are back with "Enter the Dru" (Is land Black Music ). The Baltimore quartet manages to shake off the sophomore slump. Their 19% self-tided debut album sold over two million cop ies and No. 1 singles in just two years. It is evident Dru Hill is in spired by predecessors like Boyz II Men and Jodeci. Their lyrical deliverance is sung with the same sultry and confidence as those groups, such as on 'The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind), which is an oldie by The Dells and "One Good Reason.” Dru Hill worked with everyone from Diane Warren to Babyface while also writing and producing. Dru Hill will make want to cry. On "You Are Everything "Hm Hill sings for forgiveness by plead ing their devotion to their woman. "Beautv," lead vocals by Nokio and Sisqo is one of my favorite songs on the CD. Dru will also make you-dance. With help from Redman on Dru's first single, "How Deep Is Your Love'" it is definitely worth enter ing the dru.
