BARBOUR Features Editor "Don’t go chasin’ waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to...” was in heavy rotation on every radio st2;.on in 1994. Thegroui Oiat brought you hits like "Waterfalls," "Creep," "Hat 2 Da Back" and "Red Light Special" is back. Yes, T-Boz, Left-Eye and Chilli are back with their latest, Fanmail (LaFace/Arista Records). Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, and Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes met Pebbles in 1991 in Atlant, Ga. and she became their manager. Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas joined the duo after Pebbles discovered her while she was rehearsing for a music video. The trio then signed with LaFace/Arista Records and the rest is history. TLC tries to disseminate the message of respecting yourself first and then you’ll be able to receive respect. The top singles from their 1992 debut album, Ooooh...On The TLC Tip, “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” and “What About Your Friends?” had No. 2 spots on Billboard’s R & B singles chart, while “Baby, Baby, Baby,” went platinum and held down the No. 1 spot on the Billboard’s R & B singles chart. Their 1994 sophomore album, Crazy Sexy Cool, sold over 7 million copies with their single, “Waterfalls” winning awards for Best Group Video, Best R & B Video and Best Video of the Year. Fanmail, an album dedicated to the fans was released February 23. The trio said this was their response to the letters they have received from their fans over the years. If you look hard enough you will see a lot of names on the cd cover. TLC proclaims on their newly released single, “No Scrubs,” “ a scmb is a guy who can’t get no love from me, hanging out of the passenger’s side of his best friend’s ride tryin’ to holler at me.” Some may say what about those men who are sincere. I really don't think it's okay for men to hang out the passenger windows. I think there is a better way of approaching a female. The first single, “Silly Ho” is an example of how women should have self respect and self confidence. I think we as educated black women, we should not have to lower our standards for anyone. I enjoy Ustening to the slower songs like, “I Miss You So Much,” “Come on Down,” the Babyface inspired, “Dear Lie” and “Don’t Pull Out On Me Yet.” Even though the beat is nice, I still can’t get with “I’m Good At Being Bad.” It’s like a big contradiction. How can a woman get respect if she doesn’t have self-respect? I don’t see the point of calUng yourself a female dog. I like “Don’t Pull Out On Me Yet,” but the melody is similar to that of “Red Light Special.” Don't get me wrong, I do like TLC for the fact that they talk directly to young women about self-esteem and self protection. However, this latest attempt was not their best I think I'll stick with CrazyScxyCool.
