Speaking to an audience of ap proximately 100 that included stu dents, staff, faculty and commu nity leaders, Easley said thatmort- gage lending companies target mi norities, particularly African Americans, and senior citizens. “Lending groups have been known to target those who know little about finance," Easley said. During the program, Easley played a video of a segment from ABC's Prime Time Live news program about homeowners who were not treated fiairly by various mortgagelendingcompanies. (The video was first aired on network Attorney General Mike Easley File Photo television in 1997.) Easley talked about various techniques used by mortgage lend ing companies such as "flipping" and "packing" to cause homeowners to pay more money or eventually lose their homes. "Flipping," Easley explained, is when mortgage lending company encourages homeowners into keep refinancing their mortgage. Pack ing is when a mortgage lending company adds unnecessary items to a mortgage loan package, such as a cancer insurance policy. Easley said his plan to protect people against predatory lending involves "Legislation, litigation, and education." He said that his office will ac tively investigate lending compa nies. "I want to write laws to monitor how often a company can flip mortgages, "Easley said. Easley suggested educationing consumers about the dangers of home equity scams. Easley has spoken at several meetings across the state about his plan to protect homeowner. Nubian Continued from Page1 sophomore psychology major from Spring Valley, N.Y. The week's scheduled events are to be kicked off April 7 by "Noon Time Jazz" a live performance by Keith Byrd in the cafeteria fol lowed by a dinner time picnic in the quad. Male visitors have been invited to join Belles in activities on the quad such as volleyball and tug-o-war. The main attraction of Nubain Nuance is the President’s Ball, the formal event at the Hilton Hotel April 9. During the ball the pageant winners of the Miss Ben nett College, and Miss Royal Blue and White competition will be announced. The four contestants who com peted in that pageant March 30 are Brandy Jones, a junior English major from Wilmington, Del.; MatteaHill,ajunioreducation ma jor from Upper Marlboro, Md.; Shaneik Issac.ajunior music major from Washington, D.C.; and Janell Catlin, ajunior biology major from New Jersey. Nubian Nuance will close with a Sunday morning worship service April 11 in Annie Memer Pfeiffer Chapel.. Relationship seminar takes place in Jones BY AISHA HART Staff Reporter A seminar about relationships and trust took place in Jones Hall March 31. During “Do you trust in Prin cess Cinderella?: Where Do You Place" students discussed ways to help women understand that they don’t have to put all their trust in men and that they should concen trate more on their spiritual life while trying to better themselves. The seminar was facilitated by Gayani Ekanyake, a freshwoman fashion merchandising major firom Baltimore. “I planned the seminar because I read a scripture in my Bible and I previously saw myself in that type of situation,” Ekanyake said. She said that the foundation for the seminar came from the book of Psalms. Resident Director Nicole Marshall participated in the semi nar. “I want young women to put themselves first showing self-re- spect and honor knowing the per fect mate will come in God’s time," Marshall said. Marshall said that more semi nars because she said the seminars should take place because the dia logue will help change the mind set of Bennett women..
