MLz 115 expected to participate in commencement Approximately 115 members of the class of 1999 are expected to participate in the commencement exercises at 11 a.m. May 16 on the campus quadrangle. The graduates will be the 123rd class to graduate from Bennett as an institution of higher learning and the73rdclass to graduate from Bennett as a HBCU institution for women. This year’s commencement ad dress will be delivered by Gloria J. Jeff, a deputy administrator of the Federal Highway Administradon. Jeff represents FHWA on the Executive Committee of the World Road Association. She also leads the Asian Pacific Economic Coop erative, the Transportation Work ing Group Congestion Points Study, and she currendy chairs the APEC Intermodal Task Force. Jeff, a Detroit native, has a bachelor’s degree in civil engi- [Turn to 115 grads on Page 3 | Hill discusses her role as Miss Bennett WLI to offer $300 award for leadership skills by brandy JONES Editor Mattea Hill was introduced as the newly elected Miss Bennett for the 1999-2000 academic school year at the President’s Ball April 9 at the Greensboro Hilton. An education major from Up per Marlboro, Md., Hill will be formally introduced to the Bennett College community at the 1999 fall coronation. She said she be lieves, “Just Jesus” will make her unique from the Miss Barnetts of previous years. Hill said she has wanted to run for die tide of Miss Bennett since her first year of studies here. “I want to use it [Miss Bennett title] as an opportunity to represent the school and the women who attend it,” Hill said. Hill also said that she will use the summer months to get ready for her new position. “I am going to prepare over the summer by getting a lot of rest and outlining the things that need to be done for the 1999-2000 school year,” Hill said. When asked her vision for the upcoming year, she responded, “Which one? God has given me several and I will begin by follow ing and building on what Miss Bennett 1998-99 established.” The duties of Miss Bennett in clude the planning of coronation, serving as an ambassador for the college in the community, and implementing campus wide com munity service projects. Hill said she didn’t want to dis close her programs involving her responsibilities as Miss Bennett Turn to Miss Bennett on Page 7 BY AISHA HART Staff Reporter For the first time, a $300 Lead ership Award will be given by the Women's Leadership Institute to a student who demonstrates lead ership skills during a service project. For a student to be eligible for the award, she must demonstrate strong interest and diligence in completing her on or off campus service project "The qualifications [for the award winner] will include the WLI’s expectations that uphold the accomplishments of the Institute’s mission of creating and developing phenomenal women leaders," said Dr. LeaE. Williams, WLI executive director. Application and guideline in formation for the Leadership Award will be available at the be ginning of the fall semester. Williams says that the new Lead ership award is one of the projects that the WLI has initiated to en hance the Institute's conunitment to build and strengthen its ties be tween Academic Affairs and Stu dent Development.
