Editor presents her final summer reading list reviews & previews BY KENYA A. SAMUELS Features Editor Another summer has arrived, and that means another book list for summer reading. There are different tastes, but what I recommend for your summer pleasure will whet the appetite of the hopeless romantic to the page-tuming-action packed Mafia world. Star-crossed lovers meet by chance at a telephone booth and fall in love against their will is the story of Fire and Sylvia in "Waiting in Vain” (346 pp. $23, One World Press), in the debut novel of Jamaican-born writer Colin Channer. Channer uses his heritage to bring to life the scenery, characters and plot line of these lovers who are destined to make your summer fuD of love and romance. Fire, a world renowned author, and Sylvia, a magazine editor, intertwine a love story full of humor and passion from the sandy beaches of Jamaica to the busy streets of New York City. Channer certainly knows how to ignite a flame in the hearts of those romantic BeUes wanting a summer of love. From the trilogy of "Just As I Am, Invisible Life, And This Too Shall Pass" starring our favorite homosexuals Basil, Raymond, Trent and Kyle, comes the finale, Abide With Me (350 pp, $24.95, Doubleday) by bestselling author E. Lynn Harris. In Abide, Harris picks up where he left off in "And This Too Shall Pass" with football hero Basil still questioning his sexuality, and Raymond morning the death of his best friend Kyle. We also are kept in touch with Raymond’s ex- girlfriend, Nicole, who has married Jared, Raymond’s other best friend. Nicole and Jared are facing the hardest test of their five year marriage when Nicole returns to the Broadway stage and has delayed having kids. Don’t worry, if Nicole and Jared weren’t your favorites in the past books, there are enough steamy love scenes between Raymond and Trent to keep you on your toes. In what is predicted to be the hottest summer ever, Sister Souljah has written her debut novel which is sure to keep you cool. Drug lords, sex and the mean streets of Brooklyn are the ingredients which will keep you cool in “The Coldest Winter Ever" (285 pp. $23. Pocket) Winter Santiaga is the daughter of Brooklyn’s biggest drug trafficker, Ricky Santiaga. He gives her the world including diamond bracelets and necklaces on her seventh birthday, to shopping sprees with several $100,000 budgets. But when Santiaga gets busted and thrown in prison. Winter is faced with a harsh reality and growing up outside of a life-style she doesn’t want. Souljah presents this tale eloquently. For three years I have written reviews of some of my favorite books. I hope many of you have enjoyed reading my reviews as much as I have enjoyed writing them. I am certainly going to miss working on the Banner (I will be graduating in a few days!) and doing something which combines both of my talents: reading and writing.
