He said that for the Belles to win the following game against Peace College they must be "mentally focused." “We have a good team but we just need to come focused and ready to play. Because we weren’t mentally focused it killed our team in the game earlier," Patterson said. Team captain Junie Rogers, a junior biology major from Gary, Ind. said mental errors are the prob lem "I definitely think that losing the first game has prepared us to win our games,” Rogers said. During the Oct. 2 Bennett Col lege Invitational match against Peace College, the Belles were not able to stop the opposition from coming back and winning all three matches. The efforts of Michelle Simpson, Tashauna Martin, and Natasha Brooks were not enough for a Belle victory. Simpson had two kills, Marlin had four kills and two aces. Brooks had three kills and two aces. However, all was not lost Volleybelle. Simpson, a sopho more psychology major from Houston, Texas made all-touma- ment. Hair. Hair. Long, beau tiful hair.” This line came from the 1970s hit rock musical “Hair.” Who knew that those lyrics would be a foresight of today’s hairstyles? Images of women from dif ferent races and ethnic back grounds display a variety of hair styles for every occasion. Approximately 50 percent of the 600 plus Bennett Belles wear hairstyles such as knots, layers, straw curls, pin curls, long shags, and many more. Most of these hairstyles are achieved with the use of exten sions or “tracks.” Extensions are used to drama tize styles and create a fuller appearance of hair — without re quiring the necessary length of time for hair to grow. The normal rate of hair growth is approximately a half inch per month, which totals six inches a year. However, with the aid of extensions, a person can produce six inches or longer within min utes. Weaving and bonding are the two common methods of attaching extensions and both methods use synthetic or human hair. Weaving involves attaching hair by sewing the hair extension into the person’s hair. This is done by braiding the person’s hair and then using a heavy-duty thread to connect the strip of hair to the braided hair. This process contin ues until the scalp is covered with the long tresses. Tight braiding may result in minor headaches or discomfort in the beginning. Bonding hair involves gluing the extension to the hair. Braiding of the hair is not required in this procedure. As a word of caution, make sure that the bonding glue does not come in contact with the scalp. Dr. Tariq Madyun, a derma tologist, spokeoutatSummit 2000 in 1997 about the health of hair during a panel discussion given by Essence magazine. MarkSt continued from Page 1 businesses. In 1996, Greensboro voters ap proved $1 million in bond funding to begin the recommended im provements. According to the nonprofit or ganization Initiative for a Com petitive Inner City, 25 percent of inner-city retail demand is cur rently not met by urban retailers. Melody Caldwell agrees. “It bothers me that I have to drive all the way to Wendover Avenue to find stores like Wal- Mart and Target," said Caldwell, a sophomore biology major from Newark, NJ. "When the glue comes in con tact with the scalp, it can cause a severe reaction that leads to scar- tissue formation in the follicles," Madyun said. Pamela McCain, a hairstylist at Boz & Co. Hair Design Studio in downtown Greensboro gave rec ommendations on using the meth ods of weaving and bonding. McCain said that weaving should be used if you plan to main tain extensions for several weeks, and bonding should be used to maintain extensions for a few days. “I do not recommend a person to use the method of weaving if they have thin hair,” McCain said. Another licensed cosmetolo gist, LaKenda Crook a fresh- woman sociology major fit)m San Francisco, Calif, said that the ten sion of the bonding glue on hair is not good unless you know how to remove the extension properly. “In removing extensions, one should have the proper items: pro fessional bond removal solution, conditioner and/or a heavy, oil- based product," Crook said. “Oil sheen is too light to use.” Free BMW If you arc one the 700 plu* people reading the print in this ad that means we have your atteniicKi.
