'Best Man' is more than a 'funny movie ^^ritic's Corner 1 reviews & previews MONYA TOMLINSON Editor You’ve ‘exhaled,’ you’ve had your fill of ‘soul food’ and you really don’t care about Stella or her ‘groove.’ Well, this holiday season, you should go see ‘The Best Man” (Univeral Pictures). Since its release in October, this 40 Acres and A Mule Production has assailed the box office, having the number one slot in ticket sales in its fu-st weekend. Malcolm Lee, cousin of Spike Lee (Jungle Fever, X, Do The Right Thing), makes his directorial debut with this wedding movie. What is refreshing about “The Best Man” is its plot which centers on a wedding weekend. It is the complicated story of Harper Stewart, a writer, and his circle of friends. Harper has written a novel, which is actually a thinnly veiled account of his friends and their lives. When his old flame, Jordan (Nia Long), gets an advance copy of the novel, everyone in the circle has read it by the time Harper arrives for the wedding. Everyone, that is, except Lance (Morris Chesnut), his best friend and the groom. When a secret is revealed in the novel. Harper Movie Review must deal with his guilt and his duty as the best man. “The Best Man” is a fiinny movie, but it also makes a statement about where African- American film is headed. Hollywood has only recently begun to explore the softer side of the African-American community, away from gang- banging; poverty; and struggles. I can’t wait to see what other films about Black relationships are in the works. The cast is delightful because it features some hilarious and beautiful people. Diggs takes the prize for best pectorals and Chestnut for best entrance. The standout performance was Terrance Howard, who played Quentin, the guitar-playing womanizer who instigates a confrontation. Howard was witty and over-the-top. Nia Long takes an interesting turn, playing an ambitious BET executive who is looking to move back into Harper’s life. If you haven’t seen. “The Best Man,” you need to run to the theater!
