D’Agelos’s 95 p-emiere debut. Brown Sugar, is undoubtedly a member of this originating cUque. Brown Sugar satisfied a craving that many of us did not even know we desired- a soulful blend of sultry rhythm, funk and gospel that can massage the sensibilities and sink into our psyches. The indelible impression that Brown Sugar made on our musical souls has left many wanting more. It seemed that every year, D’Angelo would answer the call, but countless delays has left his fans anxiously awaiting the release of his sophomore album. A long five years passed before Voodoo, D’Angelo’s second attempt to capture our hearts would finally be realized. Its first week released. Voodoo took the number one position which had been formerly held by Santana’s latest, Supernatural. According to SoundScan, the critically acclaimed R&B star will have moved another 190,000 plus units by the end of the week. The numbers are impressive, but does the product reaJly live up to the hype? The answer is a Music Renew resounding, yes. Voodoo is an unique musical assembly of feathery cymbals, twinkling keys, tribal sounding drum tracks, and warm falsettos which does not conform to the bounds of the usual cookie cutter, R&B album. As always, D’Angelo is pushing, su-eiching and twisting expectations to a new level of measure. The best reflections of D’Angelo’s lyrical and rhythmic mastery can be found in tracks like “Send it On,” which opens beautifully with swift, fluttering hwns that transform into what sounds like a lost love song fix>m the ’70s. And I must not forget, the siq)erb track,“Untitled” which has gained much attention from its video. Other songs like, “Africa”, “Spanish Joint”, and “One Mo’ Gin” attest to D’Angelo’s lyrical and rhythmic mastery. Although much of this brother’s poignant messages are difficult if at all possible to decipher, D’Angelo’s syrupy voice maintains to intrigue and captivate. The album is not immediately infectious, and most likely will not grab you at first, but will instead gradually seep into your musical conciseness. It is like a good book that you have to read three times before you can truly uncover its hidden brilliance. I urge that you add Voodoo to your musical hbrary; it is a compilation which can inspire.
