I applaud the civic engage ment to graphically underscore the problems identified through orderly demonstration and then verbal and visual presentation to the Students Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees in the open hearing at Annie Memer Pfeiffer Chapel, which is the undisputed place to engage dialogue in this community. Thank you for keeping this tradition alive. I hasten, however, to apologize on behalf of the College that the actions to correct most of the problems identified were so slow or low key, or most importantly, not communicated better and that you perceived that this was the only way to bring attention to the issues. As a follow-up to the meeting I convened on January 31, while the campus was “snowed in” and requested that you identify concerns and/or problems in any area which needed attention, we took your concerns and used them for organizing work to be done in immediate short term, by semester end, and by Fall 2000. The immediate work on plumbing and drainage problems in Cone, and sump pump and flooding in Pfieffer basement were top priorities and were being addressed as such for temporary response with major repairs to be completed over spring break when the entire system could be disconnected. There are several issues revolving around international students who come to the College without sponsorship and/or preplanning for their four or five year stay. However, individual work with each student was underway and had progressed to comple tion for most In fact, a policy discussion on this issue had been held with the Board of Trustees Committee with directions to initiate a comprehensive policy for adoption at the spring board meeting in June. Simply put, the academy of which Bennett College is a part, is the place for open dialogue and exploration and pursuit of learning and solutions. I hope that we always observe this process as a community and will not “lower our aims for tempo rary benefits which might be gained.” There are other issues which are being pursued for solution along with funds to enable solutions. You must be partners in this. I am requesting hall House Councils to join in the process. When spring break and mid term examinations are over, we will meet and work out a system. By the time this is published, I am sure that the major initial work will have been started and much completed. However, the total response work will take the remainder of this academic year with a proposal to begin the 2000-2001 year with much improved facilities and pro grams. I invite and request that you join in the effort to improve Bennett College.
